WWII .45 1911 barrels

I read the article in the American Rifleman magazine about Remingtons entry into the 1911 market and I noted that they are using a LH twist. Seemed odd so I had to check. In 1957 my Dad bought a Government model in .38 Super. I thought his cartridge choice was in error. As some of us may remember, in those days you could buy Government surplus gun parts literaly for pocket change so I got an Ithaca slide, a barrel, a bunch of magazines, and a couple of boxes of cartridges and set up Dad's .38 as a "switch barrel". Anyway, I just checked that old .45 barrel and it is indeed a LH twist. So, two questions: Were/are all 1911 .45 barrels LH twist? And I noticed an "HS" stamped on the side of the lug that holds the link on this old barrel. Does that mean it was made by High Standard?

    I don't know that ALL 1911 barrels are left hand twist, but it is the Colt standard.

    Yes, a barrel stamped HS was made by High Standard. There is one in my Augusta Arsenal reworked Colt.

    The H.S. is BOTH a correct Barrel for 1911A1 made by Ithaca, Remington Rand, and US&S also correct REPLACEMENT barrels for guns rebuilt. IT is NOT the correct ORIGINAL barrel for a 1911 made by Remington UMC.

    Howdy Ambrose,

    A little aside from your good questions, yet felt need of commenting on the "... in error" part-- if not aware, the .38-Super is nothing to sneeze at... power, distance, accuracy, it's a very nice round. Of course, each to their own.
    Popular enough in many countries, and still holds a following here, (U.S.), though smaller now, true, from the given time frame when your Pop purchased it.

    EDIT Ah, price of ammo-- one factor I didn't give notice to. Error I did, and right you are, Ambrose. Happy to hear you're keeping both.

    I have a HS marked barrel that has 4 lands and grooves with right hand
    twist that I asked about here last year. I got no replies worth reading. I would have to say that not all are L.H. twist.

    I appreciate your comments and, of course, do not disagree. The reason I thought Dad made a mistake with the .38 was that, at that time, good quality surplus .45 ammo was only a few bucks a box and .38 Super was a LOT more. As it turned out, he had (and now I have) them both!
