Need to ask a question from one of you FFL guys from California. Can I send a M-1 Carbine with a box of ammo and a 15-round magazine to a FFL dealer in California?? I sold one (but haven't shipped yet) to a guy out there but I want to stay legal. I am a FFL dealer (in Alabama) and I read the CA gun laws but I'm still confused.

    Thanks for any help,

    Larry

Go to the search feature: http://forums.gunbroker.com/search.asp

    Type in California

You'll find hundreds of threads regarding California gun laws.

Please accept my sympathies for the bad news but thanks for your service.

Pretty basic: No new high capacity (over 10 rounds) magazines or assault weapons can be brought into the state. Restricted items in before the ban remain fully legal but once the window closed that was the end of anything new coming in, except in a few rare situations. Your regular long guns are a non issue but since you are going to be assigned here you will likely be considered to be a new CA resident (remaining in the state over 90 days) and as such your handguns have to be registered with the CA DOJ using a form which they can provide upon request.

Fade2Gray assuming you are military you will not need to change to a CA resident but the gun laws will get you. If possible you should the fun stuff with a brother out of the state so you don't have to surrender the fun stuff. You can also talk to your legal department at your current base to see if they can help.

That raises a good question: Are you an actual member of the military or are you a civilian employee doing work for the military?

In my opinion it is likely a bad idea to discuss this with a military legal advisor as there have been a large number of prohibitions placed on military personnel and private firearms on/off base in the last year or so (Fort Hood)and these issues are not yet sorted out. Again, condolences on being stationed in that snake pit of a liberal socialist "state" ...I support sucession on their part, or perhaps ceding the state to Spain in order to really honk off the Mexicans; good riddance. Thank you also for your service to the country...good luck out there.

I don't think that California law has anything to do with private owned weapons on Federal property. I think it is like the man said what ever the military will let you have. If the PX is anything like the ones when I was in you could buy just about anything over the counter you wanted. Its funny that the military is going to decide what weapons you can have or not have on base and it was the Politicaly correct leadership that let the shooter in Fort Hood stay in the military knowing his radical back ground. That is the Government for you they screw up and every one else pays for it.

    PS:

The thing about restricting military personnel from having weapons on base is nuts! If you have some ammo and magazines sand bagged and they hand you a weapon to exercise and slip away. What are they going to do stop training!

If you are active military then you won't be a resident. That will not impact the high capacity magazines or assault weapons but your handgun status will be changed and registration won't be mandatory. Bottom line is that nothing nasty can be brought into the state so leave your AR-15s and AKs behind. If you want to bring them along and have them sit in the arms room on base for your entire stay then that is entirely up to you but you won't be shooting them anywhere in CA.

    Fade,

    From the donkey's mouth...
    http://ag.ca.gov/firearms/

Local jurisdictions, (counties, cities), do vary.

If you will be in Caly for a spell, I might suggest joining up with CRPA, (California Rifle and Pistol association)-- fore-runner for 2nd Admendment rights, both with representing in the courts, and keeping members abreast with ever changing of law with their newsletter. Which also sports some good stories and other info.

EDIT Despite one blanket opinion stated in this posting, worthy of the general discussion forum only, there are lots of good folks here with same similar interests. I shoot every day, any day I want, and have for the last 50+ dang years. Yeah, the laws suck, as most everywhere, starting with the Feds on down. What else is news?

Active duty military can obtain an assault weapons permit from the State. They must have the permit before importing them into California.
