Another P38 P1 Question Please?

I was field stripping my P38 P1 to clean the other evening. When I got it apart a small stainless steel "clip" feel off. Upon further examination I located where it came from. On the underside of the barrel there is an indented "pocket" that has a small hole that a portion of this part sticks out to act as some type of a (I'm guessing) a "tension spring" to help keep in place the milled solid steel part that is "tunged" to go into the "grooved" on the bottom of the barrel. I got the part back in - with some difficulty. However, I don't know if I properly installed the piece. If this part were missing would it be critical to the operation and/or safe to fire? (Probably a stupid question since the part is there for a reason.)Any positive feedback would be appreciated.

    From your description, it appears to be the Locking Block actuator or retainer spring. I'm not absolutely sure what would happen if it wasn't installed correctly and the pistol was fired? Perhaps in the worse case scenario the pistol would be in a unlocked mode. Being you pistol is one of the post war alloy frame versions that have problems with the frames cracking due to the stress of recoil, it would be best to make absolutely sure it's installed correctly prior to firing.

    The locking block retainer spring, as shown in the NRA Firearms Assembly book, is installed with the long leg up and pointing forward. Whether it is critical to safe firing I do not know. I
