    From your description, it appears to be the Locking Block actuator or retainer spring. I'm not absolutely sure what would happen if it wasn't installed correctly and the pistol was fired? Perhaps in the worse case scenario the pistol would be in a unlocked mode. Being you pistol is one of the post war alloy frame versions that have problems with the frames cracking due to the stress of recoil, it would be best to make absolutely sure it's installed correctly prior to firing.

    The locking block retainer spring, as shown in the NRA Firearms Assembly book, is installed with the long leg up and pointing forward. Whether it is critical to safe firing I do not know. I
