The German Proof markings on the rifle barrel are indistinct, very difficult to make out. Doesn't appear that they were sharply struck, or the steel stamps were hit at a angle for some reason. At a guess it might be chambered for the 9.3 X 72 rimmed cartridge. Your going to have to take it to a gunsmith for what is called a chamber cast for positive identification.

The upper number just below the "Crown U" would be the groove diameter in millimeters. Below that would be the cartridge case length in millimeters. As I previously noted they weren't struck into the steel correctly/evenly, as they are obscured. Instead of guessing it would be best to have a chamber cast made.0 -
Outstanding Thank you for all the help. Hope I can return the same to you some day Rocky 0 -
As best I can tell... The piece is actually pre 1918. Austria-Hungary
It appears the gun was re-proofed sometime after 1950 in Suhl, E. Germany. My reference states that more research is needed on German / Austrian proofs, but here's what I have:
Crown = C
C/N - Nitro Proof Suhl 1950+
C/W - choke-bore barrel mark
C/G - E. German, Suhl 1st black powder proof for rifled barrels
C/U - since 1950 E. German, Suhl inspection mark
Your multi-legged stamp?... 1892-1918 Ferlach black powder proof for rifles. (I'm guessing Ferlach as the obscure number stamped in the middle of the "shield" defines where the gun was proofed and probably made.)
Given the above I'd conclude that the gun was made prior to the end of WW1 and then re-proofed after WW2. Since the Suhl repair proof doesn't seem to be in evidence I'd venture that the gun was in a good state of repair sometime after 1950 and merely certified as such.
I hope this has been of a bit of help and that my info is as correct as possible.0 -
