Schuemann Barrel - Hybrid Cal 450
I have an opportunity to purchase a 1911 Officers/commander custom pistol from someone w/o much pistol experience.
The barrel is marked on the chamber: "Hybrid Cal 450". I asked him if this was chambered to the std. 45acp round.
He says he went to the Schuemann website and determined it was a "450 Short Caliber"
I think he is mistaken. My understanding of how Schuemann marks the barrels is thus: Hybrid = compensator ports along barrel. Cal 450 = standard 45acp bore with a chamber that is cut short, so that the smith building it can ream it out to fit how he wants it to fit, but it is going to be a 45acp when finished, at least 99 times out of 100.
Am I wrong? Could this be a caliber other than 45acp? Is there a such thing as "450 Short Caliber"?

There is a .45 short cartridge used in Italy to get around their gun laws that prohibit civilians from using handguns chambered for the .45 ACP cartridge. There is also the .45 Glock which is a different length from the Italian .45 short cartridge.
It's highly unlikely if the barrel was purchased and used Stateside that it was specifically chambered for either of these cartridges.0 -
I used a Schuemann a few years ago and did not have HYBRID but did have 450 marked on the barrel This was a match barrel with over size hood and lugs. After I had fit the barrel to my slide the chamber was .005 too short but only took a few turns with finishing reamer to get a Match grade 45ACP length chamber. I used to use Barsto and Kart barrels but wanted to try something different . Today the barrel of choice for many top Bulls-Eye builders is the KMM barrels. 0 -
Will Schuemann lives about 20 miles up the road from me. Karl is right on the money, 450=match barrel.
