custom 6.5X284

Looking at a custom 6.5X284 with thumbhole stock, based off of a mauser action with heavy barrel. Not topped with very impressive optics a simmons 6X24 aetec. comes with dies, brass and some loads set up for gun. really nice wood on this gun and seems put together nice. Claims dime size groups at 200 yards, asking price for everything is 1100.00. Generally what do you think without seeing it? fair, overpriced, or about right?

    Personally I'd want alot more info then you have related. Like who built it, how much and what sort of accuratizing has been done to it, what brand barrel, what brand trigger, approx how many rounds have been shot thru it and can you meet the seller at the range and test fire it to prove the accuracy claims. If someone has put real money out for a true custom rifle he will be able to answer most of those question without a hitch. If it shoots as claimed and he talks a good talk about quality components and work then $1100 may not be a bad price. But, it is likely that he pulled his real optics and replaced them with the Simmons and that he will be unwilling to prove the accuracy claim. And/or if he can't demonstrate the quality of the workmanship and components with recipts and such, then I would have a difficult time with even half the asking price....

    What brand and twist is the barrel?
    What trigger?
    What stock?
    Who did the work?
    6.5X284's are hard on barrel throats, how is the bore?

    Not untill I looked down the barrel with a bore scope, and took the barreled action out of the stock to review the mechanics of this rifle, would I pull a copper out of my pocket. The 6.5x284 is the darling of a lot of benchrester's, but it is also hard on chamber throats. For that reason, many are switching to the 7mm Rem Mag, 7mm SAUM, and 7mm WSM.

    Waaaay overpriced! That is unless it has some phenominal wood that you can clearly see is superior. The scope is about worthless or is going to be replaced so I would give it no value. It will suffice in the meantime but certainly not a good one.

    I have something right along the same lines, a 6-284, that ran me $500. And that was with a really pretty curly maple stock.

    There are a lot of "custom" Mauser projects out there. And, for quite a number of years I've picked them up for far less than what the 'project coordinator' put into them moneywise.

    The one situation where this would be different is if you have a rifle that was built by a known maker and his work is collectible such as a member of a custom rifle builders guild. In that case, you would have to give the name of the custom builder and be able to show that the rifle was built by him.
