Leupold VX-II 4x12x40 AO??
I really like this scope with the long range reticle. Would this be a good choice in this price range to put on a RRA .223. Thanks for your advice.

It all depends on how long of a range you are talking about. But if it is what you like, that is all that matter's.

I personally believe, as do some other EXPERTS on here, that the majority of Leupolds lines are too wallet heavy for the product they deliver. They still rely heavily on their name, instead of innovation and technology.
There are several recent topics on here about scopes, and scope selection for long range shooting. I can tell you, that with 12 power on the top end, you will not be able to see bullet holes from a 22 caliber much past 200 yards, unless you are using a "SHOOT-N-C" target. A deer at 400 yards on 12 power is smallish, not to mention a prarie dog, or woodchuck. Just depends what, and how far away you want to shoot it. I suggest looking up some of those other topics.

Finding a scope you like is the hardest part, now that you found one you like you can buy with confidence. Leupold is a quality company that stands behind their products. 0 -
I have one nightforce( which I love, but is expensive) In that price range I would go with the beanball elite... The rain guard is amazing... I wish the nightforce had it. I used a cabela's 6.5 x 20 x 50 years ago and I liked it; But after reading Field&Stream aug. 2005 on their scope test I bought a bushnell elite 4x16x50 and killed 2 hogs in the pouring rain- luv em now I have 3 bushnell elite. Also on F&S's test they took a 2 lb rubber mallet and " Petzal banged like he'll on the scope's" Leupold moved 4 3/4 in. Bushnell moved 1/2 in at 100 yds, cabella's Alaska guide moved 3 in. Left and 3/4 in up, and weaver grand slam moved 2 in down and1/2 up. 0
