savage 99 rebore

i've got an old savage model 99 chambered in .303 savage, curious if anyone knows anything about reboring? specifically, is it possible, if so, ball park price, will it still be accurate/reliable?

    I would be way better to reload for the 303 S as is. A new barrel would be cheaper than reboring (it's really a 30 cal) to a larger cal.

    Welcome to the Gunbroker forums!

    Be sure to check the value of your rifle as is if in original condition as modifications to the original will decrease the value.

    Also bear in mind that you need to stay withing that cartridge family for proper feeding from the cartridge carrier spool.

    Re-boring will run about $300-$450 depending on who does the work and how much more work is asked for at the time of the re-boring. It's always best to call around to folks who offer this service to discuss their ideas to see if they agree with yours.

    Unfortunately, the Savage 99 in .303 isn't all that popular. Prices on them run about what nononsense gave for re-boring. As he noted as well, you can't just change cartridges with them without also changing the rotary magazine so they can feed.

    I suggest leaving it as original and spending what ever money you would on the change-over project on reloading supplies for it. These fortunately take .308 diameter bullets. All the money left over can be spent on a new and different rifle.

    There is not much you could rebore a .303 Savage to.
    It is already a larger head diameter than .30-30 and .38-55 for example.

    Are you wanting to rebore because of the scarcity of ammo? I have a 303 Savage also, and I simply purchased a box of ammo for it, and then reloaded them when needed. I use the same bullet as I use in 30-30s. Sometimes you can find empty shells, and just make your own ammo, too. It's really quite easy. BT

    I have a passion for the 99s, and as a collector I would tell you to figure out just what you have and its value or popularity before monkeying around and ruinning a desireable piece.keep in mind that some of the older 303s are very collectable. jmo
