What action to use?

Just in the thought process. But if I was going to have a .460 S&W bolt action rifle built, what action would you start with and why?


The .460 S&W is going to become a legal cartridge (probably) here in Indiana for deer hunting. I could get a Ruger #1 or I could get a barrel for the Encore. But a bolt action repeating rifle in .460 S&W would be a good rifle for many things.

I may do that and have found a source for a .358 wssm set up. Barrels, dies etc. I also have a .223 wssm winchester rifle I bought for the purpose.

Caliber must be .357 or larger with a max case length of 1.8 inches , if the new rules is approved, it is currently 1.625 inches. The .460 S&W case length is 1.8 inches giving me a factory ammo option. Though I will want barrel length and twist rates to optimize the the rifles range. But that is another topic to deal with down the road.

    Why,,would be my first thought,,,but your call,,,I think the Interarms Mark X actions are some of the best as I have sold a couple of the Mag actions I had some time ago to a couple of proficient custom builders..2 cents --might not be much

    Most likely you will need an action meant for the WSSM family. As long as you are going that route, you might as well go with the 358 WSM from DETECH.

    I would refrain from putting that much thrust on the boltface of the 77/44. The working pressure of the 460 S&W is well above the 44 Rem Mag, and the action/magazine wouldn't be long enough either. It would be a single shot.

    A bolt action for a rimmed revolver caliber would be a good trick.
    Your best bet would be one of the single shots.
    Get a rifling twist of 18" to handle .45-70 bullets.

    Or the wildcat mentioned above if you want a repeater.

    Ruger makes a bolt action in .44 mag, so I guess it can work.

    scouts---Several months back there was just what you are describing, built on a REM. 7 action. I suspect that the 7 started out as WSM of some size or shape. I almost bought it cause it sounded really neat. Let us know about your progress. HAWKSHAW

    Thanks for the replies.

    tsr: thanks, I wasn't really thinking of using the 77/44 just saying it is a rimmed cartridge bolt action rifle.

    A model 7 remington, I hadn't thought of that one.

    I could have a lever action made, the boys in Alaska could probably do it.

    Again thanks, just in the thought process right now.

    And the Siamese mauser conversions to 45-70... To make it "easy" I'd find something with a bolt face meant for something very similar to 460 in size, then it is a matter of rebarreling/chambering. Tricky part is going to be the feeding of the magazine.

    If you aren't stuck on the 460, Rhineland Arms used to make a 45 ACP and 45 winchester mag conversion for mausers (both small and large ring). If you want to go this direction, the 308 bolt face is the right size, in fact a 45 win mag is nothing more than a cut down 308 case.
