25-06 ?

Am thinking of getting a 25-06 rifle for deer and coyotes and longer range shooting. Any suggestions on what kind to get under 750.00. what kind of groups does the rifle you recommend shoot? thanks jeff

    I have shot a ruger m77 with a medium barrel for 44 years having worked up hand loads long ago that still shoot 100 yd key hole 5 shot groups. I have taken well over 100 deer out to 400 yds. Best rifle I own, make that, used to own, my daughter has confiscated my favorite rifle and has taken over 20 deer in the past 7 years, almost all neck shots. I cannot make her stop with the neck shots [:D]. Great caliber, I have taken many hogs with one shot kills. 100 gr nosler ballistic tips are deadly with 52 grains of 4350 pushing them in my rifle. An added plus is very little recoil.

    I love the 25-06. Under $750 you might be able to find a nice Remington 700. As far as groups, consectutive serial numbered rifles will still be different.

    In respect to groups, my ruger did not shoot factory ammo very well. Probably 1 1/2" 100 yd groups. It took months to develop the loads I now shoot. Ammo was more limited 44 years ago, so newer factory ammo may shoot better. I am still loading most of the same brass I originally bought in the 60's, this caliber is gentle on brass. I did take the opportunity to get myself a new rifle when my daughter took my ruger. I bought a 257 weatherby, basically a supped up 25-06. It has made deer hunting easier, Kills um, cleans um and cooks um with one shot if they are closer than 150 yds. Also a very good shooting rifle with hand loads.

    I have a Browning A-bolt topped with a leupold variXIII 2.5 X 10X50. My favorite rifle setup. Mine just happens to shoot factory loads very nice. As stated above perfect deer and yote caliber, matter of fact may say if you cant kill it with a 25.06 there is something wrong with your shooting. There are flatter calibers out there but good loads with good optics and the 25.06 can hang with the most of them. Would not take triple of what I have in the setup for it!

    A friend had a NEI or NEF in 25-06 that shot 3/4 inch groups right out box with factory ammo, The 280 Rem he had would 1/2 inch with reloads. The only I don't like about them is the weak extractor design, solution carry a short section of brass rod.

    The simple answer is a Tikka T3. They are amazing out of the box. Amazing ergonomics, smoothness of the action, trigger pull, and best of all, the accuracy.

    Over the last few years I've had or have 5 different 25/06's. They varied from a rebarrelled Mauser 98 to a Savage 110 FP with a heavy barrel. The Savage FP will shoot cloverleafs with Remington 100 grain factory ammo.Another Savage 110 with an Adams&Bennett rebarrel will do almost that good with that ammo. My best overall handload has been a Sierra BTSP 100 grain @3200 fps. It does the job on deer and coyotes. You should be able to find a complete setup including a good scope and some ammo for $750.

    Go with the Savage long action. There is NO ONE in the firearms business putting out a more accurate factory rifle in a price range that even approaches them. SAVE MONEY ON THE RIFLE, AND PUT THE EXTRA BUCKS INTO YOUR OPTICS! I handle and shoot a staggering variety of long guns, and this opinion is based on my experience over the last decade plus of range bossing a 300 yarder in southern Wisconsin.

    Check out the Marlin XL7, http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=213325138. I bought an XS7 in 243 about a year ago and put a 2-10 Nikon Monarch on it. It shoots half minute of angle with my 70 and 100 grain reloads and cost about $300.00. The link I cut and pasted doesn't work: Just search Marlin 25 06 on Gunbroker.

    Marlin xl7 around 300.00 great trigger mine shoots great and leaves more money for better glass
