What kind of steel in receivers?

Can any body tell me what kind of steel was used in the various gun receivers? I found that the pre-64 model 70 win. is 4140 chrome molly.
I need to know the steel for Savage 99 mid 50s production, Ruger 77, and Remington 1903-A3. Any help would be appreciated.

  Maybe the difference between using a HSS or Cobalt drill bit??
  Just a guess.

  One heat treatment cannot be used for all Springfields.
  Materials and heat treatments for receiver and bolt differ by serial number and maker.
  Steels used were WD 1350 Special,1350 Modified,WD2340,WD4045, WD8620 Modified, Springfield Armory Class C Steel and WD 35NS.
  There in much info on composition, heat treatments and hardnesses in Hatcher's Notebook if you can find it.
  They are not standard SAE or ASTM grades so published heat treatments
  need to be followed.

  I do know about the different steels used in the Springfields. That's why I asked for the 03-A3 only as far as Springfields go. I hadn't thought about Hatcher's Notebook! I have that book in my stored stuff. I'll go dig it out. Thanks for the info, I appreciate it.

  You will definitely cobalt steel cutting tools, also called M42.
