Why did Auto Ordanance make a odd ball 39rd. drum [?]
Can anyone tell me what one is worth [?]
It is in about 80% condition.

The 39 round drum was made in an attempt to simplify(and make more reliable). they had a single row of cartridges around the outer perimeter that was supposed to feed more smoothly inside the drum.
39 just happened to be the # of rounds that fit in the dimensions of the drum.
As for value, I have no idea.0 -
Original drums, like the original USGI Thompson box magazines, are not compatible with the semi auto Thompsons (USGI magazines need modifying). 39 rounds was selected for the new drums in order to improve feeding as well as to simplify production and make it cheaper to produce. 0
