springfield armory sportmaster

I.'ve owned my springfield armory m1a "sportmaster" since the mid 90's ,I bought it new at a gunshow . I've only seen 1 other like it and the stock wasn't the same color. Basically its an m1a with a grey/black laminated stock w/a monte carlo style shape[with a scope it's great to get your eye/cheek up in the right place like an m21] and a rubber buttplate.It's stamped on the rear top of the receiver US RIFLE SPORTMASTER SPRINGFIELD ARMORY #SM 00xx. the other 1 I saw like it had a reddish black stock. As you can see the serial # is less than 100. I know this was made during the early 90's before the "crime bill" is preban and was primarily made too make the m1a look a little less sinister to the gun control idiots. I've called SA and at first they argued the'd never built it , but finally got ahold of someone that worked there when they were built but he knew very little other than they were a very limited edition .any info you might have ,production #s,dates, colors available, value compared to a std model, etc would be appreciated. another question as long as I'm here I also have a birch M1A E2 stock in 90/95% condition that was bought on a new springfield M1A in the early 90's, whats its worth approx. these days ?     Sounds like an interesting variation. I've never heard of it, & it's not listed in the Blue Book.

    There is little "collector" interest in any of the SA Inc rifle variations, with the possible exception of those made by Elmer Ballance. They are, after all, reproductions of the US M14 rifle. My SWAG is that it would sell for the same as any other SA Inc M1A in similar condition with the same upgrades (premium barrel, NM sights, NM trigger group, USGI parts, etc.)

    So, I've had a Springfield Armory "SportMaster" Edition M1A sitting in the closet for a while. I got it as a gift so I never knew too much about it or what kind of value it has. It looks like it's basically a National Match (based on the NM sights and NM trigger group but I don't really know enough about M1A's to really compare) with a high comb laminated stock and a factory clip guide scope mount. It's bone stock and in excellent condition. Apparently, the SportMasters were only made in '91 and `92, with serial numbers up to the 160's. I've heard that only 144 of them are circulating and that most of those were exported to Europe. This is all internet chatter so I don't really know whether it's true or not, I just know I've never seen another one and there isn't much more info out there than that.

    E-2 stock in good shape will fetch 400-450 bucks. I sold one of my 2 about 3 years ago on M-14forums.com with all the hardware after 3 test runs (for fit to particular rifles) for 450. Potential buyer paid return ship.

    Well I'm back with a little more info I've found, the picture that spider posted is the twin of mine. I've done some more research on these and found that at least 279 were manufactured [i've seen photos of the serial # on this receiver],although it was worded and spaced differently than mine US RIFLE M1A SPRINGFIELD ARMORY SPORTMASTER SM0279, mine doesn't say M1A. There were evidently at least 3 versions the grey/black laminated,a reddish/black laminate, and a solid walnut model. As to value I found a grey laminate w/o scope or accessories that sold for 2k on gunbroker, and was offered $2400 for mine without scope ,mounts,or accessories.[I'm not selling her anyway, I was just curious} I want to thank those of you that answered my post. If I find some more verifiable info I'll post it here Ray
