Nononesense et al...6mm AI question
Have a friend in need of some advice. Has a choice between two guns, both Penrod build rifles. One, on an XP100 action in a benchrest configuration is a 6mm BR, which I am very familiar with and really have no questions on, but the other, a Remington 40X action is chambered in 6mm AI. Both are late production and have less than 50 rounds through them, so would be considered near/as new.
My question regards the 6mm AI. Have not heard of that one. Have played with the aforementioned 6 BR, the 6PPC, 6 Dasher, 243 AI and doubtless several other 6mm's I have forgoten, but have no clue on the 6mm AI. Is it simply an AI blow out on the Remington 244/Remington 6mm Express case? Is it a total wildcat, or is there SAAMI standardization on it? Is it new, old or simply unknown? Is the case production (if it IS a parent case cartridge) as simple as fire forming up Remington 6mm Express cases and neck sizing from there on out? And in the same vein, who makes brass and of what quality (gentleman plans to use this for 600 meter) in terms of uniformity and metalurgic quality?
Thanks in advance for your input/suggestions regarding this chambering. Best,
Bill

1KYDSTR,
The 6mm AI is the 6mm Remington fireformed in the Ackley Improved chamber. Standard factory ammunition or your own reloads can be used in the AI chamber. The shoulder is blown out to 40 degrees and the body taper is straightened also. This yields 62 grains of case capacity approximately.
It is one of the standard cartridges which Ackley chose to work with since it's based on the 7x57 Mauser. The body taper of the original case lends itself to being 'improved'.
Generally speaking, the increase in capacity gets you a slightly broader selection of powders from which to choose
Nosler is releasing .257 Roberts +P cases, Norma makes 7x57 cases and Winchester/Remington make the standard 6mm Remington case.
