Winchester Model 70 Pre 64 Scope Mts

What are your favorite scope mounts for a Pre 64 ( actually Pre War but has been drilled)?

Id like to use a Lyman Reciever sight and a scope.

    Back in the 1980's when I decided to use my 1956 vintage Model 70 Featherweight (30-06) for deer hunting; I bought a Leupold Vari-XIII scope for it and chose Leupold's 2-piece base mounts. I've used this combination on this Model 70 ever since and still like the setup.

    Added: Rex, I debated the one or two piece issue also. I was inclined to go 1 piece for what I presumed would be the stability and rigidity of the mount and wondered if the two piece would maintain its setting and not cause some scope drift. However, I didn't like the idea of the one piece extending across the chamber. I talked to a number of one and two piece users and didn't get any answers that would sway me one way or the other. So, I decided to go with two piece since I hadn't heard anything that made me believe they lacked stability; from my experience I like the two piece and haven't had any problems, but others might have different experiences.

    This will give you an idea of how my particular mount looks.

    No, the old 44 has been with me for a long time; it's one of two that remain out of my 1st collection. During deer season I like to set aside some time to "retro hunt" and that Model 1892 and a companion 1st Generation Colt Single Action usually replace the Model 70 for a couple of days; great feelings of days gone by!

    I also have Leupold 2 piece mounts on both a Featherweight and a Standard rifle and am happy with both. If you have any problems, include the forearm screw tension in your troubleshooting checklist. They can sometimes be too tight. The Featherweights of course do not have one, but as yours is a Pre-war rifle that does not apply.

    Rex, Before you buy scope mounts I suggest you consult a chart of mounts. I believe the pre-War and post war (but still pre-64) Model 70's used different bases. I installed a Redfield one piece base on my Featherweight #377670 and had to put as shim under one end to make it fit. I prefer the two piece bases and have had no problem with them.

    Thank you all for you responses. "Old colts -- do you want to seel the SRC? I did find a Packmeyer ( I know I miss spelled it) Fold oever with correct spacing. Has anyone used them

    Herschel is right, they do use different mounts.

    A post script to another issue worth mentioning. One thing you may find is that the Pre-war safety is extremely inconvenient when using a scope (Safety comes to the rear from the forward left side position). This is one of the reasons they reversed the direction of the safety at the same time they started tapping the rear bridge at the factory (safety moves from rear position to right forward).

    I have 2 piece Leupold Detacho mounts and rings, somewhat difficult to find but worth it. Scope comes off and on with 2 levers

    Keep in mind that one of the problems with the old 70's is that some could'nt get the scopes back far enough to there eye (look at old -colts photo above). Some folks needed an offset front base in order to get the scope back further.

    As mentioned the pre and post war use different length one piece bases. The pre-war should use the same as later target bases.
