slotted 700 receiver
I just picked up a really nice old 6 digit 700 SA receiver, and it seems to have a stripper clip slot machined into it, never noticed one one before I guess..... Is this a factory thing ?????

The 722 & 721 all had that cut-back in the receiver ring and I've seen other early 700's with it also. I can't really tell from your picture: does it have the "notches" in the sides of the cut-back like the Springfields have?
BTW: That's an awful pretty birds-eye maple stock!
EDIT: I discovered the hard way about that cut-back. I had an old Leupold Adjusto-Mount for a 721/722 that I wanted to put on a 700. When I went to set in on the receiver bridge, I found that the cut-back was required for clearance for the bottom of the rear base!
Without the "notches" I wouldn't think stripper clips would work. I never tried it, though.0 -
No notches at all, just a straight cut like is shown 0 -
Any ideas why it's even on there ?
It was chambered for a 222 Remington..0 -
To stump the experts on GB ask the experts? It is definitely not for a stripper clip. 0 -
Any idea what it is for them ??? 0 -
mrbruce,
This feature was used for the lugged scope base chosen by the Marine Corp. for it's short action sniper rifle M40 based on the Remington M700 SA. This is the version using the wooden stock which was summarily replaced by the improved version M40-A1 which utilized the McMillan fiberglass stock. The lug was retained in the slot in an attempt to prevent catastrophic failure of the mounting system.
The Army version is the M24 which uses the long action M700.

Thank you for that information.... 0 -
OK, you got me curious so I removed the scope mount from one of my 722's (a .300 Savage). I scrounged a Springfield stripper out of my range box and tried it--it doesn't fit! Of course, the "notches" are not there but also, the slot is just a tad too narrow. It seems odd that the rear of the slot lines up perfectly with the rear of the magazine as it should if it were a clip slot. Taking into account the era that the 721/722 was made, clip loading would have been a practice that was occasionally used so maybe there was an additional machine operation for that slot that was dropped early on or never done at all. Since the early 700's used the same receiver, I guess it should be no suprise that some of them had that slot. The 725 in my collection has that slot, also.
BTW: There is a 6-didget 700 in .222 Rem. Mag. on the auction side, #212378792, that has that slot. Note that it does not have the anti-bind groove in the locking lug, either, as the later 700's have--does yours?0 -
Mine don't have the anti bind cut in the lug either....
I've had a ton of 700's, but never had one with this cut out in it before..
Who ever owned it before I got it sure took really nice care of it....
I plan on using a 6SLR chambered barrel with it......0
