reloads & max pressure on 1916 spanish mauser
hello;
got a 1916 spanish mauser several days. is there an on line program i can use to calculate pressure for reloads????
at 50 yards jacked bullets did not do very well but speeds were WAY lower than speer or sierra data. making an adjustment for barrel length, speed was @7% lower than speer data. want to keep jacketed reloads below 45k#, but don't have a clue on how to determine pressure.
at 50 yards, shooting 16.5 grains of 2400, 187 grain gas checked rcbs cast bullet got a 10 shot group (measured) 1.0x 1.1/4in group.
looks to me i can't really trust speed to get a rough idea of pressure with this rifle.
thanks for any input.

You would be better off posting a reloading question in the reloading forum. 0 -
IMHO, you shouldn't be pushing your luck with the old Spanish Mausers. They don't have the best rep as far as quality of materials and workmanship are concerned.
Be happy with the group you just shot with 2400, it's quite respectable. Be aware that 2400 is a fast burning magnum pistol powder though. You make a mistake and throw a double load,and you will wind up in the brain hospital next to Rep. Giffords, while the docs try to figure out how to get the bolt handle out of your head.0 -
I would advise using a starting load of IMR 4895 for jacketed bullets. If you're going to use lead bullets, find the correct published data and stick to it. Look for a manual that lists the pressure of it's starting loads and stay in the 45,000 CUP range. 0 -
You're not looking for a guide on how much extra powder you can use with a shot-out barrel to get back up to normal pressure, are you? 0 -
thanks for replys.
barrel is not shot out. it's bright, no sign of pitting. just looking for info running jacket bullets a self-imposed limit of 45k#. accuracy at 45k# or less is my goal.
can't kick about the way it shoots cast bullets. been shooting cast bullets off and on for 30+ years. rifle was purchased to shoot cast bullets.
thanks again
