Looking for S&W Model 59 in California
Tell me if I can do this please. I am a california resident and I want to buy a model 59 S&W. I omce had one and it was one of my favorite guns. I regret ever selling it. I understand I can only buy this gun from another california private party. Is that right? I see several listed in the auctions but none in California. Is there any way I can legally buy this from someone out of state?

As a practical matter you can not buy the gun from out of state unless you are exempt (or make the gun exempt) from the CA roster that requires guns imported be on "the safe list". If you are LE, if the gun is being transfered from Mom or Dad out of state to you, if the gun is single shot it is exempt. SA revolvers and C & R handguns are exempt too. In CA, folks temporarily make a gun like this single shot and once it's "out of 10 day jail" reconfigure it to semi auto.
Don't know where you are in CA, but last weekend I saw more than a few 59s in San Jose, San Mareo, San Bruno, Moutain View in northern CA.0 -

I've seen them at gun shows, but mostly the local gun stores. They're not too hard tto find.0 -
The very similar S&W Model 5906 is on the California roster. Check one out at your local gunstore, it may be what you're looking for. It has a curved palm swell instead of straight in the M-59. Also, being a California shooter, you should check out the Calguns.net forums. Model 59's and 659's (stainless version) sometimes show up in the classifieds.

Robert, Iam in Orange County also. There will be a gun show next weekend at the Orange County Fairgrounds. There are also a couple of big gun auctions I go to regularly that frequently have 59's for sale. 0
