I am going to buy a set of barrel bedding/barrel channel scraping tools. I've seen a set sold by Gunline but not too many others out there. They have a set with a variety of diameter cutters. I also see indivicual tools that two handles with a u-shaped shank and a cutter. What's the easiest to use for a beginner. Or what works best in your view? Right now I am fitting a new forend to my Winchester Model 55. I had the forend duplicated and need to move some material out to make it fit right and tight. Please advise.

The Gunlilne tools are easy to use and nearly foolproof. The kind with multiple cutting rings work great for me. By carefully applying the pressure, you can remove a small amount of wood with each "pass".

I've always just found a socket of the appropriate size, wrapped it with some sandpaper, and went to work....

Brownells, and I think Midway USA too, sell packs that come with extra cutters of different sizes.
replacement cutters are more readily available for the barrel bedder Jr. (one handed tool) but I personally like how the 2 handed tool works.

B, I just ordered the two handed set from Brownells. Can't wait to give them a whirl.

I'd like to back-up abit and ask ...WHAT was you using to spot the high spots in the barrel channel?

The gunline tools work great as long as the wood is secured in a vise. My choice for final fitting is a Dremel with the flexable attachment and different size sanding drums. Lipstick is a good marker to see where the high spots are located

I put lipstick on the underside of the barrel and place into stock. Anywhere that the lipstick transfers to the stock is hitting the barrel. Then it's easy cleanup.

I used a Dremel tool with the large round burr. I used lamp black to ID the high spots, and then chased it dowm with the burr ...fast and does a clean job. Good Luck!
