    Spanish made Mauser military rifles had a crest and date of manufacture marked on the top of the receiver. Similar to the one shown in this photo.

    From your description it seems that the crest and date has been removed from your rifle, and the rear sight replaced.

    EDIT #1, A reworked version of the Model 1916 short rifle in caliber 7.62 X 51 was manufactured in the 50's with a peep sight. It was called the FR 7. Is their any chance that this is the rifle you have just acquired?

    hello;

    thanks for your reply. its a 1916 spanish mauser for sure. crest is removed. the stock is also different from most 1916s. does not have the "english style(correct term ?)" stock. the bolt does not match the serial number on the rifle. barrel is bright, no dark spots, lands look nice and sharp.

    have not fired the rifle yet.

    got the rifle from a seller on gunbroker and the rifle is as discribed by seller. seller also said he had the rifle checked by a gunsmith and the gunsmith said the rifle "had no issues".

    thanks for your input.
