It has to be over 25 years old. They were made by Howa in Japan and sold under the S & W name from the mid 70's to the mid 80's. I wouldn't be buying it unless you got a guarantee that you could return it if it didn't function correctly. No telling where it's been, and what was or wasn't done to it, and whats the round count over the last 25+ years.

For a mint gun 300 would be it...but thinking 250 and you shoot it first. I have had a few and had ok luck with them,,,but I don't go shoot 300 rounds in a week either.

bought one new in the late 70's, 28" vent and 20" slug barrels..used 28" for informal clay bird shooting and the occasional bird hunt, used the slug barrel several years for deer. I still have it and because I have taken good care of it , it is still working like new. it was a great shotgun for the price,
I agree in mint condition and given the opportunity to test it out $300 is a very fair price, anything of lessor quality or not 100% guaranteed to properly function worth a lot less-- buyer beware-- fixing a broken one not worth it in most cases

they had a rubber recoil damper that had a tendency to deteriorate over time and get gummy. Thus doesn't eject. It can be cleaned and shot without the damper but some minor damage will occur, Dampers are available I believe. About 5 years ago I had a mint 20 that I replaced the damper on Numrick however that's spells ie gun parts corp might have dampers , under 5 bucks + 5 to ship it, I'd buy an 1100 before I bought that S&W

I would say that its near mint... no rust, clean, and shiny bore...only thing i saw was one minor ding in the forearm...the guy said he had it apart and it was fully funcional and good shape... i would just as soon have an 1100 but thought since the price was pretty cheap i may give it a shot... all i plan on doin is shoot dove 2 or 3 times a year with it so sounds like it would be fine for that by wat yall say... i will insist he check the o ring if i do go back to get it...thanks

Bought one of these new just because it was so pretty and needed a shotgun. Used it a fair amount, worked fine, and set it aside for a time. The O-Ring melted either from age or possibly wrong lube but found an outfit selling pricey new ones and back in business. Must have liked the gun because I bought the bigger 1000M 3" Magnum with the steel receiver for a duck gun. Haven't shot a duck in years so gun has had little use. Still have extra O-Rings around here somewhere and suspect the proper size ring from anyplace would work.

The S&W is a semi clone of the 1100, and twice the gun. S&W wanted out of the shotgun market in the mid late 80's and sold the contract to Mossberg. Mossberg sold them for two more years, same model numbers, before producing their own semi auto model.
It's only flaw was the rubber shock absorber, and the gas valve. The gas valve problem was addressed in the Magnum model.
The shock absorber is easy to change, do it when you clean the gas system after shooting. The newer replacement ones are oil & solvent resistant.
If it has melted, and the gun is fired, the gas piston pin bottoms out on the magazine tube slots it rides in. That will bulge the mag tube and stops the action bar from cycling. A shock absorber in good condition, will show a third to half of it's thickness at the bottom of that slot when fully seated.
You can't get a replacement mag tube, I got the last one from Numrich. They said there was a small possibility they "might" get a few more. Somebody in TX was making a few replacement parts.
If I can find it, I have the factory manual scanned to jpg images. I'll have to look, but it may be on my hard drive that crashed, and I still have to salvage the data from it.
