Reloading 9mm
Several people say why bother with reloading 9MM because of the low price for factory rounds. But, I enjoy the reloading step of the hobby. The questions. What type of primer would be best? I will be doing mostly plinking with a carbine. Also what powder and powder weight would work good? What about bullet weight? Thanks

Hi guys,
I've just recently begun reloading my own 9mm ammo and am having a bit of a problem. I am using a Lee press with a RCBS three die set. I am having trouble with the crimp depth. The info that came with the dies states that the crimp should be within .0005 to .001 of the rear of the case. I barely have any crimp on the cases and am still getting over a .005 discrepency in the measurement. I'm using federal cases and am not sure if they're pre tapered (if there is such a thing) or not. Any help would b greatly appreciated!!!0 -
The dies do the tapering. You should size all new brass if that's what you are starting with.
I think you are misreading something. .001 of the REAR of the case is the rim itself, or the extractor groove.
The RCBS 3 die set does size/decap, expand, and seat/crimp. Simple enough; just screw in your seating die until it touches an empty case, then about 1/4 of a turn more and it will give a light roll crimp.
Some would say with good reason that on a tapered semi auto case, a taper crimp is better, but if you are careful in die adjustment, you're probably good to go. Or, with a fairly low recoil round, a crimp may not be needed, just screw the die in to touch an UNFLARED case, and the seater will remove any flare without providing a crimp.0 -
I like to seat and crimp my semi auto rounds in two different steps. Make sure you do not over crimp the bullet. If you have anyone local that is an experienced reloader have that person stop by and show you how to adjust the crimp...its hard to explain online. 0 -
Thanx guys, to jonk, i was meaning that there was supposed to be a .001 difference between the diameter of the crimped neck and a point between the middle and the end of the case. Thanx alot for your help guys, I'll try the quarter turn thing, I'm pretty sure I'm not running any crimp at all. thanx again for replying!!!!!! 0 -
I got me a Lee Factory Crimp die....works great....

Thing to understand is as long as the shells feed in the gun your crimp should just be tight enough to hold the bullet in the case enough so it won't migrate in or out of the case, but not so tight that it deforms the bullet. measurements are all a relative guide to get you set up so that you can fine tune your set up to fit your situation. All you want is for your rounds to feed reliably and be accurate to your needs. Otherwise don't sweat the measurements to much because they are only a reference guide. All guns are different and thats why we reload, to fine tune your firearm. 0 -
Go to the compition and reloading forum and read the post on crimping. Ti tells you a lot [;)] 0 -
Geeze, what measuring tool are ya mis-using here?
Re: " ... info that came with the dies states that the crimp should be within .0005 to .001 of the rear of the case."
You couldn't possibly hit 5 tenths (.0005") with a common caliper.
Try .005" to .010" crimp from the case's MOUTH.0 -
I have seveal manuals that say not to roll crimp any round that head spaces on the case mouth of which the 9mm is one. There are taper crimp dies but no crimp works just fine for me. I have don thousands. 0 -
Hi....I also have done many over the years. I used bullets with no cannelure, and as long as your cases are sized properly, a tightness on the bullet formed by the die as it tries to crimp is all you should need. I used Hornady 100 gr FMJs, which are out of production, unfortunately. I have shot a S&W 39, and a Luger with no problems. BT 0 -
Seriously, the RCBS Info states .0005 to .001, I thought it was a misprint too just for the simple fact that my caliper readings were off so much with no crimp at all!! My crimp right now is giving me a decently tight group at 15 yds. so I think it'll suffice. I just didn't want to hurt my pistol. I just bought it so I'm sort of babying it for now. It's an IMI "baby eagle" full size and I love it! Just can't find any grips or parts. I make my own usually but this thing has ramps that lock it into the frame so I don't think I can replicate it. Thanks alot for your help!! 0
