Cody Museum Letter Question
I have recently acquirred a Winchester model 1892 that was made in 1892 with a serial number of 52xx. The question is, whether to spend the money to get a Cody Museum Letrer and whether it would add value to the rifle.
Thanks

YES & YES IF you have reason to believe that your rifle has all Original parts . Winchesters are highly collectible if all the parts are original. That is where a letter will enhance the items value .However if it has replaced wood, or barrel has been changed, or Rifle has been REBLUED. Then it has lost most if not all of it's collector value, and is just a 100 + year old Shooter. Then IMHO a letter adds little to the value. Your Mileage May Vary 0 -
First get the "yellow sheet" from cody, this will tell you if the gun "letters" and is worth spending the money on the certified version.
Bert will be along soon to correct us lugheads if we have steered you wrong.0 -

The "yellow sheet" went the way of the Do-Do bird at least a half-dozen years ago. It was re-incarnated as a CFM research sheet, and it is only available to current members of the CFM. For the general public, the Factory Letter is your only option.
What I can tell you, is that serial number 5200 went through the Polishing Room in December of 1892. It will most likely letter as a December 1892 gun, but it could be a bit later.
If your Model 1892 matches the letter, it does indeed add value to the gun. However, if it does not match, you are out the cost of the letter, and the gun itself is worth a lot less.0 -
Texas1894,
Hello, and welcome to the forums here on Gunbroker.com.
You have recieved good advice, but no one has yet asked for you to give us some GOOD pictures. Several well lit(natural daylight is best), close up, and in focus(use Macro function on your digital camera). This is a sticky topic that tells you how to post photo's

You will need to use a photo hosting website like photobucket, or imageshack.
We will then be able to advise you if the rifle is all original, and worthy of a letter or not.
