S&W n frame round butt grips
I just got a S&W .44 mag. It's the "N" frame with round butt. Wondering if the Hogue 500 grips will fit it? OR... are these for a square butt pistol only? They are listed on S&W website and it is a little confusing due to the fact that it reads "conversion" Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

If I read what you're saying correctly you wonder if the Hogues that fit the X frames (500 & 460) will fit a round butt N frame? If so, yes they will. My dad put a set of those on his round but N frame and he really likes what that extra cushion does for his hand.
"Conversion" means it's a grip that fits a round butt but makes it look and feel like a square butt.
EDIT: This is the list of guns that S&W says the Hogue Tamer grips fit.
"(Must Have Rounded Corners On Butt Of Frame) Models 10, 12, 13, 19, 64, 65, 66, 296, 386/PD, 396, 586, 617, 646, 648, 681, 686, 696, 24, 29, 610, 624, 625, 627, 629, 657, 460 and 500."0 -
Unless, S&W changed the N grip frame size for the round butt version, then NO, the 500/460(X-frame grips will not fit it. The X frame, and the K and L frames are all the same size. The N frame grips are bigger.
The above statement applies to most versions of the N frame. I am not 100 percent posative, but I have heard that in the last year or so, they switch the grip frames on the N-frame to the same size as the X,K and L frames.

Two statements above are wrong. The S&W N frame round butt hasn't changed since it was made. If the 500 grip frame is the same size, the grips will work.
N frame grips are a little different in size but will fit K&L frames.0 -
Smith and Wesson's web site lists K&L as medium frame, N as large frame, and X as extra large frame. 0 -
I would give the customer service folks at Brownells a call. They handle grips for all the various S & W models. If any body would know it would be them. Another positive dealing with Brownells is if the grips they send you don't fit, you can send them back. 0 -
I read in another forum that they would fit. It is a 629 mountain gun in 4" barrel. I will give brownellsa call. 0 -
X frames use the same sized grips as K frames: these will not fit N frames. 0 -
Not trying to argue here but they fit my 629-4 as well as my dads 629-5. They're on his right now. S & W says they will fit and they really do. Here's the link.

I think I have a pair of custom N frame round butt wood grips. I can't recall if they are hogue or perhaps eagle. 0 -

Well that is a good thing. Perhaps you might try looking on Hogue's and Pachmyer's sites. They list two different sets of part numbers. One set for the K and L frame, and then another for the N frame...in both ROUND butt and square butt versions. S&W's site list them as seperate part #'s also. I wear size 38 jeans...but I too can fit into a size 40 or 42.0 -
When I got my "classic" new Mdl 21 with the round grips (I believe most of them now come with square grips), even though I have small hands, the stock grip was so small it was ridiculous. So I ordered round butt- convert-to-square butt grips...and then the grips were too large!
However, both the round Hogue rubber grips and some really spiffy Hogue custom wood grips fit my hands quite well. So you might have to experiment some.
Since I've never had a round L frame, I can't help. But round butt K frame grips don't fit my N frame Mdl 21.0 -
The 629 mountain gun has a K Frame grip... 0 -
that's good to know! I was told they were an N frame! 0
