I have 2 Hawkeyes; a .257 and a 7-08.
Both showed mediocre accuracy "out of the box". (i.e. 3 to 5" 3 shot groups at 100 yards).
Both responded well to a little upward pressure at the fore-end tip.
With no other modifications both average about 3/4 " at 100 yards, 3 shots.
Two of my favorite rifles.0 -
Late last summer, our friends left their oldest (12) and youngest (6) sons with us here on the farm while they took their middle son (9) to physical therapy due to some back sugery. I told them it was range day and since the 12 yr. old was here, he was going to shoot. His folks didn't seem too pleased with the idea but, for some reason, they trust me. The kids are children of our current times and have never fired a gun of any kind. I have a 100 yd range and a shooting bench here and had it set up and had been shooting there that day. Since the kid had never fired a gun, I wanted to be sure that he didn't get kicked and that he actually hit something. Now I have several varmint rifles and wanted to pick the right one so I choose the Ruger Hawkeye in .204. He's not a real big kid so he had a little trouble getting into a comfortable position. I set him up with shooting glasses and ear muffs, set the scope on 16X, and told him to have at it. After the first couple of shots, his bullet holes started to get close together. I said, "Let's try something." We walked down to the target and I taped a quarter to the target. I told him that the way the rifle was sighted he should aim just under the quarter. The hole isn't quite in the center but he had someting to show his folks when they got back!! I kinda like that kid!
I hope I didn't steal your thread but I wanted you to know that I picked the Hawkeye when something as important as this came up.0 -
Great story. Well done. And congratulations to the young marksman! 0 -
From what I have seen, the Hawkeye, is a continuation of the 77 Mark II, with a couple refinements, like an adjustable trigger, and some ergonomics. I also see some bean counter innovations on it too. I would imagine that it would be like most 77 MK II's, and with a little masagging, can turn in spectacular results...but they are nothng to write home about, out of the crate.
