There were two makers who used the name WILLIAM MOORE & CO. One English, a English maker 1854 to 1872 and the other Belgian. The Belgian made gun was made by a maker named Henri Pieper from 1877 to 1898. After 18988 the company was known as Ancirns Etablissment Pieper. To tell the difference between the two, take a look at the bottom of the barrels inder the forearm. The English made gun will have English proof marks consisting of crossed scepters or halberds (spear/battle axe) with a crown over that and letters in the intersections. A Belgian made gun will have the letters "ELG" in an oval with a crown on top.

Your description is too vague. Is your gun a muzzle-loader, or a breech-loader as "black powder cart." may imply? What is your source of "1856"? (If you mean the crown over BP Birmingham provisional proof, it has been in use since 1856)
