Rem Power Piston wad ???

I have an almost full box of 1000 old Remington power piston wads for target paper shells 12ga 1 1/8 oz, w23676 . Can these be used in any paper shells or just Remington shells and could they possibly be used in plastic? Maybe I just have a nice vintage box for display. Thanks, any help is appreciated...........Tom

    I don't have much information on this wad, but it does appear in Lyman's 1st edition Shotshell Handbook. It could be used for both 1-1/8 and 1-1/4 ounce loads depending upon hull and propellant. For example:

    Winchester Compression-formed hull (AA)
    1-1/4 ounces of shot
    23.5 grs. PB (This would have been DuPont and not IMR)
    Remington Power Piston #W23676
    Winchester 209 primer
    1220 fps @ 10,500 LUP

    Remington "Old Style" plastic target hulls (These were a ribbed hull with a fairly high separate basewad with clear plastic molded over an asbestos-like material.)
    1-1/8 ounces of shot
    21.0 grs. PB
    Remington Power Piston #W23676
    Winchester 209 primer
    1145 fps @ 6,800 LUP

    Same Remington hull
    1-1/4 ounces of shot
    24.0 grs. SR-7625
    Power Piston #W23676
    Federal 209 primer
    1220 fps @ 9,300 LUP

    By the time Lyman's 2nd edition came along (1976), there was no designation for the W23676. The 2nd edition showed RP12, SP12, R12H, R12L, and RXP12. These designations correspond to W29926 (RP12), W29928 (SP12), W29924 (R12H), W29922 (R12L), and W23694 (RXP12).

    I wonder if the "old style" plastic target hulls are the old blue ones(blue magic)that my grandfather and father had a ton of when they did a lot of reloading. Thanks for the info, maybe I will get set up and load them, they seem to be in good shape and not brittle. I also have a lot of old pacific veralite wads, blue, red and white, and the old Pacific loading book calls for mainly paper hulls. Thanks again.........TOM

    gumby, that wad might have been discontinued, but it's possible it was only renamed.

    Here's what I would do: take a sample or two in to a store that sells wads and hold your w23676 up next to the current Remington wads. No need to take one out of the bag. If you find a match, you can just use data listed for the SP12, or RP12, or whatever number matches. If there is no match, find one with the same height of cushioning section; a mismatch in the petals won't cause a major problem in load fit or chamber pressure.

    I still have a few w23694 wads, which have the same overpowder cup diameter as yours. I don't like them in compression-formed shells with tapered walls (AA, the old Blue Magic, current Remingtons, etc.) because they put a bulge in the hull. They work fine, though, in Federals and other straight-walled plastic cases with separate base wads, which are more or less similar (except for base wad height) to the discontinued Remington SP and "old style" target cases they were designed for.
