According to Bert's numbers, it was made in 1946. It looks like a nice, clean 94 to me.

    Cartod,

Looks like you got a nice example of a flat band. It has been carried in the deer woods many miles. Most likely carried a lot, and shot just enough to supply all the venison one could want. Most likely a 1946, or 1947 vintage. Did you take the wood off to look at the date stamp on the barrel yet? I am not sure about the "X" at the end of the serial number.

I am sure Bert will be along to enlighten us[:0]

Nice old flat band. I think the "X" was added when Winchester discovered a duplicate serial number.

Cartod, Old Colts is correct. The X represents 2 duplicate serial numbers. When this happens, one rifle recieves the X to keep 2 from floating around with the same number.

I have been told it can add 10% to the value, but I'm sure Bert will clarify. Nice looking rifle.

    Todd,

The "X" indicates that it is the second gun with that serial number. It does not add anything to the value of that gun. If you had the other gun with the same serial number, it might add a small amount of value if sold as a pair.

The serial number places the DOM in early 1947.

Thank you my gun brothers. What would you say the odds are of finding the other gun with the same serial no?....[:o)]

What would you say the odds are of finding the other gun with the same serial no?....[:o)]Approximately 1419765 to 1 [:D]

However, one of Bert's Sticky's suggests that 1963 ended at circa serial number 2,600,300; so considering all prewar/pre-64 production, perhaps approximately 2600300 to 1 is more accurate! [:D]
