"So without those markings, what does that tell me"

Well, it tells me that the wood furniture has been sanded, and re-finished.

Look very closely at the center area of the right side of the stock. There originally was an ordnance stamp there (crossed cannons in a circle). The stamping was shallow when originally imprinted, so it may have gone bye-bye during refinishing. Best, Joe

An original Winchester handguard would have this profile:

If Joe is correct, the wood would have been refinished when your carbine was rebuilt, either at a US arsenal, or somewhere else.

If you want to know more from us, you will need to post photos. Or, you may want to buy a copy of "US M1 Carbines, Wartime Production" by Craig Riesch.

The later stock are not that hard to find and cost less than the older Winchester stocks. The better condition the stock is in the more it is going to cost you. The stock you have is worth some money so you would be able to off set the coast of a better condition stock. The wrist should have a P proof on it if it was not covered and the bottom of the stock as shown in the picture is flat, the wrist is thicker than others.

    Good, hunting
