Demilled Japanese knee mortar

I'm looking at a demilled knee mortar, it has a bar welded across the the bore and a hole milled in the base of the tube. I was wondering if there is a minimum size this hole must be? Don

  The opening must be at least the size of the shell the mortar was intended to fire.
