Ruger #1?

I am told that if a #1 has the red recoil pad it is the model before they stamped the big warning on the barrel. A black pad indicates it has the warning.

Is this correct?

  Not correct, Frank. The red to black changeover took place throughout 1993. Ruger first started putting warning billboards on circa 1978.
  
  I have one from 1987 with red pad and "Read the book" billboard on the barrel.

  So I guess you have to ask the seller if a particular gun is pre-warning.

  If you are buying from the auction, a "good" seller will include it in the pictures. You also can't really go by the pad color for pre/post 1993, as a lot of people chose to switch out the pads.
