First, look at screw holes- are the edges dished out? Sharp edges, rounded over? Lettering still have sharp edges? This comes not from the actual bluing- which is a trip through a hot tank of bluing salts, but polishing out scratches, pitting, and wear. If the gun originally was a high polish blue and now is matte, or vice versa. Some cold blues you can smell. 0 -
It is ALL in the Quality of the work done. The better the quality the harder it is to tell . People like Doug Turnbull do woork that is VERY hard to tell. For the most part it is very hard to match the look on some of the old guns because the original finish LIKE FIRE BLUING is no longer done like the early Colts. Also there are very few people doing Case Color. On top of that. When things like barrels are stamped with dates or letters the CRATER left by this stamp has a small edge/ ridge that will be left . There is almost no way to refinish and leave this edge/ridge. You need to have a magnifying glass . Remember also that only High dollar guns will have the attempt to do a restore High End quality refinish . in other words no one is going to spend $1500.00 to restore a Mossburg 500 shot-gun but they will on an early Winchester Lever gun or a Colt SAA it is all about the money spent compared to value increase of that firearm. UNLESS it is a family piece that they just wants to have grand-pop's gun look new again. and these you will never see for sale. 0
