Which Colt box?
Hi, experts. At what point in production did the 2nd generation SAA go to the stagecoach box? Would a 2 nd gen. SAA at around serial number 11,000 have come in a black box or the stagecoach box? thanks. Jim

Hi, Experts. I bought a 2nd generation Colt SAA and I'd like to find the approprate box somewhere/somehow. My SAA's serial number is in the 61,000 range. Does anyone know if this takes the stagecoach box or the brown, wood grain box? Thanks Jim 0 -

I am sure that Old Colts will be along soon to correct me if I am wrong! Does the SAA have a 5 1/2" or 7 1/2" barrel? Unless I am mistaken, the Stagecoach box was made for the 5 1/2" barrel and the brown Wood grain box was made for the 7 1/2" barrel whether it is .357 or .45 LC.Nope, not me, the Colt in question isn't old enough; I know very little about these new Single Actions. [:D]
Having said that, I do believe that all 3 standard barrel lengths (4 3/4, 5 1/2, and 7 1/2) all came in the Stagecoach box during a certain period, but I'm not sure of the period. I'm sure a collector of 2nd Generation Single Actions or someone with Wilkerson's book can answer the question though.
brummiejim - I assume your Single Action has an "SA" suffix; as in 61000SA?
Added: I did a search on the Colt Forum, where I'm a member, and found a post that states the following:
SAA Early 2nd Generation
- ser. no. range 0001SA to approx. 39,000SA, shipped in one-piece black box similar to pre-war box. Mfg. from 1956-65.
SAA Mid-range 2nd Generation
- ser. no. range 39,000SA to 70,055SA, shipped in a red and white, two-piece, stagecoach box. Mfg. 1965-1973.
SAA Late 2nd Generation
- ser. no. range 70,055SA to 73,205SA, shipped in a brown, wood grain cardboard shell with 2 styrofoam inserts. Mfg. 1973-1976.
I don't have any postwar books to verify the correctness of that post.0 -

The "Stagecoach box" was used for all barrel lengths. Here's are 7 1/2", 5 1/2" and 4 3/4" barrel models:

I believe Colt switched to the woodgrain boxes around 1970/1971 when the supply of Stagecoach boxes was depleted.
Edit: Good info, OC. I couldn't recall exactly when they changed over.0
