Being the owner's son, it's my sworn Gunbroker duty give this new member an extremely hard time. First of all, I've fired this lil' Pathfinder, and I have to say it's in terrible condition. I could barely hold on to the grips because they were chewed up by a dog. And when he says the revolver is blue, he means, "I colored it with a blue Sharpie." Finally, and most importantly, this guy has never, ever, NEVER, EVER caught a big fish. Ever. In his entire life. In fact, IIRC, when he took me fishing in Costa Rica two years ago, I caught all the marlins and dorados. All he caught were baitfish.

In all seriousness, I tried to look on the auction side for a guesstimate price on his Pathfinder, but all that's for sale are stainless and/or snubby models, not his particular blued 3".

You already know my opinion on a replacement .38 Special....can't go wrong with a Smith & Wesson. Taurus makes a good "knock-off" and you still get a great warranty, but purists here will argue against straying from the S&W j-frame.

    Good luck! Love you, Dad!

Current asking prices on the Charter Arms are from $250 - $325 but none of those have any bids.

You can buy a serviceable .38 for around $250 or you could spend quite a bit more.

Henry O lists some excellent, reliable examples. Just remember, the auction site is a great resource for researching "general" prices on firearms. However, if you end up with a winning bid, that's not the final price you pay. There are shipping & handling costs, as well as transfer fees to send the firearm to/from an FFL. That xfer fee can be as little as $10, and others as much as $30 or more.

I think I paid $160. for my same model Pathfinder. Guy was asking $180. Bartered down to $160. But that was before the Obama election. Priced have jumped since them. And come back down on some items. .22 pistols were one of the HOT guns that really took a price jump. People were buying them like hotcakes and once easy to find models (like Pathfinders & Sentinels) became hard to find and expensive when found. Not sure what a used one goes for now. But I'd bet at least $180-$200.

I think a nice piece of advise is to shoot every small frame revolver anyone will let you near (in good condition, of course) and decide which is the correct blend of economy versus quality. My advice? A little Smith and Wesson J-frame Airweight, either 442 or 642 in 38+P. Dad has a couple and they are really great carry guns and shoot like, well, Smith and Wesson. Great triggers, and the 442 on single aciton can be fired with a surprising degree of accuracy. These can be had from between $400 and $475 NIB, and around $300 used (the few I have ever seen for sale used!).

    The Pathfinder...worth around $200 IMHO.

So, my dad took his Pathfinder to one store today and they said they'd give him $125 for it in trade on a previously owned Ruger LCR (DOA). He'd still pay out of pocket about $250 to get the LCR. Kind of good deal, but I think he can do better and not have to get the "latest & greatest" snubby.

Good deal MY A$$...That deal sucks! look on here...the auction side, and you should be able to get a LCR for close to 300.00....NEW IN BOX

Yeah, plus one on that Tsr...You could get the Smith for that money with the $125 and expect to put out about $300 cash. The LCR's have not been around long enough to warrant a big price drop for used but still, I think that deal sucks. The $125 is not unfair as they need profit margin...just a big price tag on that used LCR IMO. For the 442 I mentioned, I would expect to lay out an additional $275 for NIB.

I'm sure you have a pretty good idea for what the Charter Arms gun is going for. As far as a little 38. I have a S&W 438 Bodyguard that I absolutely love. It shoots five rounds of +P ammo, and is VERY light. No fancy laser, but it has the shrowded hammer. I like this because it gives me the option of being able to shoot both SA and DA. The DA pull is very nice and consistent.

Correct me if I am wrong here folks, but I believe this is the same gun now going with the Airweight name.

    Technical Specs:
    Model: 438
    Caliber: .38 S&W Special +P

    Barrel Length: 1 7/8"
    Front Sight: Integral
    Rear Sight: Fixed
    Overall Length: 6 5/16"
    Weight Empty: 15.1 oz.
