Hello Rackmaster51,
Specifically, on September 8, 1938, Winchester made the decision to undertake a number of design changes as follows;
Prior to September 8, 1928, the Model 62 used the following guard components:
1. Hammer stirrup
2. Hammer stirrup pin
3. Flat mainspring
4. Mainspring screw
5. Mainspring strain screw
6. Trigger oin
7. Trigger spring screw
After September 8, 1938, the Model 62A used the following guard components:
1. Hammer spring (coil)
2. Hammer spring abutment
3. Hammer spring abutment pin
4. Hammer spring abutment guide rod.
When you look at the lower tang on a Model 62, there are four screw holes that are visible. On the Model 62A lower tang, there is only one visible screw hole (the tang stock screw).

One of the most obvious differences is the larger wood forend on the 62A, bottom, versus the smaller one on the 62 top.

Hello Rackmaster: The changes that Bert outlines, including the observable 4-holes in the lower tang vs one hole, trump other modifications. For example, a barrel inscription will say Model 62 yet the 4 holes in the lower tang tells (the knowledgeable collector) it is really a 62A. Winchester was using up "old" barrels. 0 -

That is not actually the case. The slide handle change was not tied to the "62" versus "62A" change. Many people incorrectly believe that the longer slide handle is post-war, but that too is not accurate.0 -
Thanks for all the information, guys. That broke it down for me,real good.Very, very interesting, cant wait till i have another question. 0 -

Yes, thats technically true, but I was speaking generally of these models. I have run across no less than 40 62's and 62A's at auctions in the last 18 months and in every case the 62's had small forearms and the 62A's large.0 -
Love my '57 62A. 0
