    Hello smarsh1,

Welcome to the forums here on Gunbroker.com.

Yes, it can be rechambered, but there will be more that needs to be done. The bolt face will need to be opened up, and the action rails modified to feed the fatter round. Also the magazine follower will need to be modified most likely. For what it is worth, and what little performance you will gain, I would stick to the Whelen.

    Best

    EDIT 1

A word about the Improved Whelen...

Yes, it is a possible solution, but you might still have to modify the feedrails. The barrel will have to be set back a thread or two possibly also, for the reamer to make a clean chamber. In a bind or not, you can also use the standard 35 Whelen factory loads in the improved chamber.

An easier option would be to rechamber to 35 Whelen Ackley Improved. This would obtain increased performance w/o alterations of the bolt and feed rails.

Keep in mind that the Whelen improved is a hand loading only proposition and the "improved" is only a slight improvement.

    smarsh1,

    Welcome to the Gunbroker forums!

Yes, it can be done but...

The bolt face will have to be opened up to accept the larger rim.

The extractor will have to be replaced with something like a Sako-style extractor which means more machining on the bolt.

You'll need a new follower for the magnum cartridge.

The feed rails will have to be opened up.

The feed ramp will need adjusting.

I have no use for the .35 Whelen but I do see a reason behind the .358 Norma Magnum. The drawback is the lack of rifles actually chambered for this cartridge. This is an indication that you will want make a rifle for it. However, sanity may dictate that you sell the Whelen and buy a Remington already chambered for a belted magnum and then simply replace the barrel and chamber.

Price out both methods and choose your best route.

    Best.

Thanks guys. Not sure what I wanna do but being left handed makes finding what you want more difficult. Found a nice rifle on gun broker 35 cal but not sure I want a whelen. All it takes is money is guess. Thanks for your replies.

What exactly are you looking for? What are you going to use it on/for? Perhaps we can help.

I always like the obscure. Probably would like 35 wsm. North American game. I have a 270 AI for my hunting rifle right now. It is a good rifle and shoots like a varmint rifle. But..... always lookin for something cool just to be different ya know. I would like stainless composite stock something suitable for alaska. First started out with 338 win mag in mind.

I don't believe there is a .35 WSM but there is a .325 WSM. I have one in an A-bolt and like it very much. It shoots very well and I would think it would be great for Alaska.

There are several dozen .325's on the auction side. You might check #208963221 and #211032731 to mention just a couple.

Well, if you are kind of set on the .358 Norma Magnum because of it's obscurity, then there are two nice rifles in the caliber on the auction side.

    1. Custom built Winchester Model 70 with a 25 1/4" PacNor barrell and has brass, ammo and the dies available at an extra cost.

    2. Husqvarna Vapenfabriks with a 26 3/4" barrel.

Both come with scope mount bases and rings and although the Custom built Winchester 70 is a nice setup and the brass, ammo and dies are available, I think the Husqvarna Vapenfabriks would be the best choice. I grant you that neither are in stainless steel but they are both nice rifles if you are looking for the obscure!

    hello;

need rem. 700 long action, 35 whelen = 30/06 brass open up to take a .35 cal. bullet. 30/06 brass is easy to find and 35 whelen requires no mods to bolt face. easy to resize '06 brass to .35 whelen. whole new ball game when you talk 358 n. mag.

find a barrel, gunsmith to install, possible cost to get a 35 whelen????. suggest you watch gunbroker rifle parts for a barrel. got my barrel that way.
