Hornady Ammo
I have a Marlin .308 Lever action rifle and it was built to only shoot Hornady Lever Evolution ammo. I have been shooting the 160 grain Lever Evolution and they shoot great. But now Honady has a new thing called the mono-flex bullets and they have made one that can shoot out of my rifle it is a 140 grain bullet and they say it is supposed to be better and it is another $15.00 unfortunately. But if it is worth the money I don't mind buying them can someone who knows something about this help please

How do you build a gun to shoot only one style of bullet? 0 -
I think it was built to take full advantage of the improvements gained with Hornady's LEVEREVOLUTION ammunition.
With those prices, you might want to consider reloading.0 -

John,
It was Marlin's new round, the 308 Marlin express, only available in their tube fed lever gun. The ammo was developed by Hornady, with the "patented" "flex tip", so they could be spitzer shaped, and still loaded in a tubular magazine. There was initially only one loading offered for it. See the other post, as I covered some ground on it.
Keep up the great work on the NFA sticky![:D][:D][:D]
Best
EDIT 1
Yes John, you are correct, that any bullet that is used in the 30-30, can be used in the 308 Marlin. However, most 30-30 bullets are designed to expand at lower velocities, and could give you failure to penetrate to the vitals on large game if used at the higher velocities of the 308 Marlin.0 -

That kinda makes sense but still not the ONLY bullet style you can shoot out of it. I will agree that it might be stet up and perform best with the FTX style bullet.
I am wrong that you could use any .30 cal bullet that would typically be used in a .30-30?
Thanks for the kind words.
EDIT: That makes sense. Thanks.0 -

Well, that can be complex or simple. as you might realize, the twist rate has a lot to do with it, as does the type of rifling itself. Some of the Cowboy lever actions from Marlin, and the BPCR rifles have a type of rifling that favors cast lead bullets. A faster twist will favor heavier, longer bullets, where a slower twist will favor a shorter lighter one. Polygonal rifling like what is used in the 44 magnum Desert Eagle I have, versus standard cut rifling, the new rave of 5R rifling, and other's. Its not that other bullets will not shoot OK, or really well, but they were designed with a purpose in mind.
