A clip can be used to feed ammunition into a magazine, but the magazine feeds the ammunition to the gun.

A magazine contains the ammo in a firearm and can be removable or detachable.
A clip holds a given amount of ammo and is then inserted into a magazine. The clip for M1 Garands is a good example.
However, clip is a very common term for a detachable magazine. Arguably incorrect even though some gun maker call it that.

A magazine has a follower and spring. A clip just holds the cartridges. I would say the M1 Rifle has no magazine. I suppose you could say the clip, spring and follower in the M1 Rifle together make up a magazine.

The 4 on the left are clips.... while the 2 on the right are magazines.

I have a factory "clip" from Savage, it holds three 30-30 win rounds. It is removable.

Hard to keep folks calling them by the correct term when the manufactors do it also.

...and, I will add, that a magaazine does NOT have to be removeable. Some guns have "blind" magazines that are built into the gun, like many Savage Model 99s that load through the open breechbolt ( and quite a few others, too). Also, a good number of rifles with tube-fed magazines count as having non-removeable magazines, plus many shotguns are equipped similarly.[;)]
