.31-'06 ARGENTINE 1909 ?
I'll have an 1909 Argentine soon. The chambered was reamed by the Importer in the '50's to .30-'06. Seller has not shot the Rifle. Got a bunch on Mausers from an Estate. The bore is still 7.65mm so this really is a .31-'06...correct? Depending on how good the re-chamber job was done this could be accurate with .311 dia. bullets. How do I re-load? Use .30-'06 dies with .31 cal expander? Info for .30-'06 load data A-OK in the 1909 Argentine? Has iron sights and Military stock has been cut (sporterized) Bolt has been bent, but not enough to clear a Scope mount. Advice I have so far is to see how she shoots current before drilling/tapping, new bolt handle, scope, new barrell/caliber, stock etc. Rifle is on the way! What to do?

I guess I'd try factory .30/06 loads first. They might shoot very well and at least would tell you whether an '06 will fit your chamber. Next, your '06 die/.31 expander idea. You might have trouble with the '06 seater die not having enough clearence in the neck area, but I doubt it.
I have a couple of 1909's with origional chambers and they shoot very well with .311/.312 bullets. No reason your ".31/06" shouldn't shoot as well provided the bore is in good shape.
Good luck with your "new" rifle.0 -
The Argentines rechambered many of these themselves after WWII, as part of increased cooperation between their military and ours.
Does the recever bridge have ".30" stamped on it? Is there a small half-moon-shaped cut at the rear of the center of the receiver ring?
Those are indications of it being government-converted.0 -
the ones I've had (several) would usualy do 2 to 3" at 100 yrds, good enought for a deer rifle. you can try the .312" bullets, if a 'boat tail' design you wouldn't even need the .31 cal. expander button. 0 -
As I recall Sears sold 30 06 and 7.65 rirles in the 60's the 30 06 was slightly more. 0 -
I've had these - I just used the starting loads and .311 bullets - worked well. .308 bullets may be fine, never tried, sure wouldn't hurt to try. 0 -
Depends what they used to recut the chamber. If really to spec, .311-2 bullets might not chamber in an 06 unless you neck ream the brass.
Remember, the Argentine Mauser has grooves of a nominal .313". In practice, they may be bigger still. A .308" bullet is going to be minimum of .005" undersize and is NOT going to shoot great- perhaps ok, but not great.0 -
I traded for a sporterized rifle that had this treatment. The bore was seriously worn and wouldn't shoot .308 bullets well. The chamber neck was too tight to load /311 bullets w/o turning the necks quite a bit thinner. I was also concerned about having ammo around that was in 30/06 cases w/oversized bullets so I used the action to build a 338/06. 0 -
The 1909 arrived. I slugged the bore which is .312 inch. Shot two .308 dia. .30-'06 rounds at 25 yards which were 1 3/8 inch o.c. The chamber & bore look excellent. Military stock has been butchered with recoil pad upside down? Butt shaved to try to meet pad? Bolt is bent. All serial #'s match. Maybe get a sporter stock and use as-is in .31-'06? Loaded 15 trial rounds. Only had to change out expander in '06 dies. Same load as for my Garands which is 48 grains of IMR 4895 pushing a 150 grain bullet, only these are now .312 dia. vs. .308. The barrel is 23 7/8 inch in length which looks like Bubba "ruined" an Engineers carbine. Wow...what to do now? ADVISE........ 0 -

Post a pic. I'd be curious to see how bad Bubba did. The stock worries me, lol.
If you tried .312" bullets as I think you did by saying you changed the expander in the 06 dies, and if everything chambered properly, then you are good to go. how'd they shoot?0 -
The chamber neck may be too tight for .311 bullets and boost pressures.
It may need reaming unless you want to thin out the '06 brass necks.
If loaded rounds drop in without forcing, you're good to go as is.0
