I have a Marlin 336 in ,30-30 caliber. The rifle was made in 1963. Was this era rifle ever made in .32 Special? I have been doing searches but can not find any info about a .32 Special with this rifle. The .30-30 and .32 Special have basically the same cartridge brass except for the caliber of bullet. It seems logical that it could have been marketed in .32.

I dont think they are made any cheaper than they were thirty years ago.I beleive it is one of the best lever guns you can purchase. There is no diffrence in the quality of the guns made thirty years ago and the one made today. I have one made in 1968 and one made in 1987 and they look identical. The 30-30 is a great 100 yard brush gun. I took my first deer with one from 210 yards.I didnt notice any changes in the safties but I will have to look. You should pay around 350 to 400 for a new one so check the prices carefully. I see alot of them at gun shows for around 300 used in excellent condition. You can find them cheaper in good condition.

I was referring to the cross bolt safety as the additional safety

Marlin added the crossbolt safety about 1983. I have 2 336s, a 1969 model and a 1985 model...both are equally built and the safety is the only difference in them.

And the safety does not bother me at all. I agree the quality has not declined, except the wood (which was never great) may not be quite as well figured. That is true of most stocks by anyone these days.

The 336 is highly reliable and durable the forend wood can be a weak point. My preference is the .35 caliber...
    Overall a very good gun.
