Ammo for old revolver
H&R Sportsman (.22 LR nine shot revolver.
I have this revolver and I would like to find ammo for it.
It is Mod # S3292
A standard 22 LR shell does not want to fit in the chamber.
It appears to be too big in diameter. Is there a smaller diameter
22 LR shell for this revolver ?
Thanks, Mike

No smaller diameter .22 ammo. But it could be that the pistol was used w/.22 short, or longs. In which case there may scouring in the cylinder that prevents the LONGER .22LR from fitting fully into the cylinder. Will a LR go in at all? 0 -
You might need some serious scrubbing of the chambers with a brass brush and solvent. Also check carefully if there is a burr on the end of the chamber from the firing pin hitting it.
Some sharp close-up pics posted here will help us, help you. Are you sure you don't have some .22 MAGNUM ammo by mistake??? BOB0 -

.22LR comes in one diameter only, though there actually can be SLIGHT differences in diameter between cartridges from different manufacturers.
Agreeing with the above, if ordinary .22LR won't fit your gun the chambers are either dirty and require good scrubbing with a wire brush and solvent (most likely) or damaged (less likely).
One other possibility worth mentioning is just that the .22LR CARTRIDGE you're using to test the chambers is out of spec! That does happen, especially with some of the cheaper bulk-packed brands of ammo. You can get rounds with damaged bullets that won't chamber in any gun.
So before you make yourself too crazy, at least try a different test cartridge (from another brand).0 -
Make sure the edge of the chamber is not dented from some idiot dry firing the pistol. It could get battered in if hit enough and cause the cartridge not to go in.

Very good point!!!!0 -
Will they not fit in the cylinder? Is it excessively dirty? I would check out the cylinder REALLY good to make sure that it is clean, hasn't been dented/burred anywhere, and if it might be marked for just shorts and longs. 0 -
The ammo could have oxidized. Is there a white powder on the bullet? That'll make it get bigger. 0 -
Buy some 22 shorts...
For starters work it in.0 -
Thanks for all the replys to my question about 22LR shells
not fitting the chamber. Ill check for burrs, cleaning and try
with new shells.

Take the cylinder off the revolver. Chuck a .22 cleaning brush into an electric hand drill and polish the heck out of the chambers. I'll bet they have become corroded or just plain dirty from firing, and possibly from firing .22 shorts or .22 longs. In any case, after ensuring the firing pin hasn't peened the rear edge of the chamber, use the brush in the drill to polish the chambers until they are mirror clean. You may even have to wrap a bit of fine steel wool around the brush to get the gunk completely out. Just run the brush in and out while it is spinning. It's kind of like polishing the cylinders in your engine. 0
