The safety selector is removed by first removing the pistol grip screw and grip. On the right side of the receiver and pistol grip there is a spring that protrudes from the top of the grip and pushes against a pin that rides in a groove in the selector.
Once the spring and pin are loose the selector can be removed but you may have to cock the hammer first. DPMS is one of many companies who carry ambi selectors for the Ar rifles.0 -

i would like to install an ambidextrious selector from fire to safe switch...What you've already been told is correct, but just for clarification the AR part you're referring to is correctly called the 'safety lever'. It's solely a SAFE/FIRE item.
'Selector lever' refers to an M16 (full auto capable) part. In addition to being a safety, it's to select SEMI or AUTO modes.
My intent is not simply to be picky. The correct nomenclature might come in handy when looking around for the part you're needing.
EDIT: There's no need to completely remove the pistol grip. Just loosen the screw until you can drop it far enough for the detent to release the safety lever, then slide it out.
Be careful you don't kink that detent spring.0 -
Be careful when removing the pistol grip....once you remove that detent spring, those detents have a way of disappearing!!! You drop that and you'll spend entirely too much time on your knees with a flashlight! 0 -
Pretty much any one that sells AR parts will have the ambi. selector 0 -
thanks for the info as far as nomenclature goes the last time i even saw one these rifles was in 1965 thru 1966 guess where unfortunately my mind is fading i dont remember alot about the rifle my gunner took care of all weapons on my helicopter all i had to do was to perform whatever we needed to keep it flying thanks hank k 0 -
Be advised this is only informational & not professional advise. Please seek a qualified Gun Smith before any modifications or repairs are done. Do not attempt your self. Disassembley is best over carpet by slowly removing the grip screw while positing the riffle upside down. The little spring should be seen as you unscrew the grip & slowly release it's tension. Take the pistol grip off & place the spring somewhere you can find it later. Turn the riffle right side up so that the plunger pin falls out. Clean & lube all parts. Carefully rotate the safety lever until it falls out. Get a DPMS Panther Ambi-safety from Midway or Brownells and assemble in the reverse order. The left hand ambi lever screws on when every thing is installed. Use blue thread locker on the lever screw. 0 -

OK which is it? You state "Do not attempt yourself" Then you go on to tell krawiech how to do the work on his carpeted floor.
This is not a job that requires you consult with a gunsmith. Looking at an exploded parts diagram might help, but a chimp could probably do the job with some coaxing.
Oh yeh, rifle is spelled with 1 "f".0 -

I agree - it's pretty easy. I can't recall exactly, hammer forward or hammer back to allow the safety to be inserted? I think it's hammer down so the tail end of the trigger drops out of the way and allows for the safety to be inserted.
CDNN generally has good prices on the ambi safety lever.0
