I have a model 16 Savage 243 cal. syn. stock, stainless action and barrel. It is topped with a Simmons Aetec 2.8x10x44. The gun and scope are in excellent condition. It is a left handed action. What can I expect/ask for this gun. Thanks for your input. [8D]

That I believe will be an 1885 and Bert will be along sooner than later with an admonition to post pics, and subsequently a fine determination of it's history and production dates....he's the "1885 man"...

    Hello Gail,

What you have is a Model 1885 Single Shot Rifle. The barrel is octagon (8-sided) versus hexagon (6-sided), and it should be 30-inches long (as measured to the breech opening) and a no. 3 size (stamped on the bottom flat of the barrel just forward of the forend stock tip). According to the information I have, it was manufactured in October of 1891. If you would like the exact date, the Cody Firearms Musuem Research Office can (for a fee) provide you with a factory letter.

If you are unable to post the pictures here, please send them to me at Win1885@msn.com
