Weatherby .300 Mark V lazermark Custom??
I work at a dealership in Waterville MN. A customer brought us this gun on consignment and i instantly had someone interested in it. After some small research i did i priced the gun at about $1800, the customer brought the gun to a cabelas where they told him it was worth $900. I found the exact same gun without the gold plate on the bottom and no original weatherby rings or scope, i found this on a cabelas website where they were asking $2000. So i did some more research, ive discovered the gun was made in roughly 1976 in japan, the serial number of the gun i found on the cabelas page was much newer than the one i have.
My question is what is the significance of the gold medallion on the bottom of the reciever? This is a 4 plate stock with the leaf engraving into the wood. I believe it is a custom shop gun because it has very inticuit wood like none ive seen online, and i have yet to find another with the gold plate.
any other info you may have would help greatly!
any help is appreciated!
Thank you

Upon searching the serial number it is a lazermark.
Ive got someone who knows alot about these that states it is a custom shop gun and is worth twice what cabelas told our customer.0 -
You can order custom floor plates from Weatherby. When I purchased my Weatherby from their store in Southgate, I ask for some customization and action work done and one of the things they did was replace the existing plain floorplate with a custom one. 0 -
I have had a couple Lazers,,but that wood is outstanding.[:)]..and floorplates were not like that one,, 0 -
Welcome to the world of "Cabelas making a profit". That is why he only got offered $900 for it. It is easily a $2k gun in their stores and they would love to make a grand off of it. That is marketing plain and simple. Cabela's is a high recognition brand name store and they can charge high prices like that. Because, someone goes into their gun libraries and sees pretty guns. That kind of customer has money and doesn't want to spend a lot of time shopping around. Other stores tend to specialize in either low-volume high dollar stuff or higher volume of low to mid range stuff. Or, as in Wally world, the most of the cheapest they can push out the door.
As to the rifle, it has a number of things going for it value-wise. It is a Weatherby first and foremost. It is a Mark V. Whether or not it is a Lazermark or Mark V with a Lazermark stock on it brings some contention to the field, but not really a drop in price. That good looking of a stock will bring the $600 as described above by itself. Add another $500 just for the gun and you have a minimum of $1100 on trade in. My blue book shows a Mk. V {edit: Lazermark} in perfect condition @ $1200. But, it's a couple years old now. Meaning $1500 is more apt to be a perfect price for one.
In the world of used guns there is a lot of give and take on the value of them. Most, as in %90 of the time, one party or the other walks away with a really good deal.
My suggestion is hold out if he doesn't need the money and see what he can get for it. If he wants to insure it, then go with the highest price he feels comfortable with.
And, welcome to the Forum Fmxlevi.0 -
Thanks for the welcome, ive been selling on gun broker for a few years and just realized there is a forum. I scrounged a bit when he told me what Cabelas offered him. We take pride in providing our customers with the best deals around. It really makes me sick to hear of people that are willing to basically steal out of their pockets and not lose sleep over it.
It may just be a Mark V with a Lazermark stock on it. Of that i am not sure. I met a few people who knew exactly what the gun was stating that it truely is a Custom shop built Lazermark. I had one guy who was interested in the gun that knew exactly what it was as well and he too said it was a lazermark, "i found him on another forum where i was asking questions about the gun" After i wiped the gun down more and cleaned it up i found some small rust spots on the barrel. The owner apparently took it on a trip, where he did not shoot it but did not wipe it down prior to putting it in the case. So the moisture started to take its toll. It did not pit at all and i got most of it taken care of, what i could anyways.
So based on the rust and the few small dings in the stock i based the gun at %91 perfect, taking a guess that it is worth roughly between $1200 and $1500 in this shape.
ive also got the gun listed forsale on Gunbroker now for anyone whom may be interested in it.
