22 Magnum Rimfire Ammo-What's Best?

In my opinion, the choice of rimfire ammo is entirely subjective. I have a little Mark II in LR that will put most of them into a dime at 50 yards using Fiocchi range ammo! The same gun will not group Eley Tenx under an inch! It likes what it likes, cost and companies reputation be damned! Your besty bet would be to mail order some 50 round boxes and see what is the best thing out there. My old Marlin likes Remington 22 WMR...having said that it seems to like virtually everything I feed it.

Indeed, competition rimfire shooters DO weigh their ammo, even if they are using expensive stuff...the extra money normally means you will not have much variance in the weight/performance.

I sure like the CCI Vs. PdS to 150 yards.

My 93 likes CCI best as far as functionality as well as groups. Both the 40grn JHP and 40grn FMJ load group around 1" at 100 yards, to just about the same POI as a bonus. I tried several Winchester loads and had issues w/ each one - misfires, very far fliers, failures to extract, failures to feed, etc.

Check your crown, remove gun from stock and re-seat it, torque specs for the Savage rimfires are 15 in/lbs on the action screws.

If you can find it, try every brand of ammo out there. there ant that much, maybe6. I've had the best luck over the many years I've been shooting .22 mag ammo, with the orignal winchester 40 gr hp. I recently came upon some winchester dynapoint, on rabbits it acted like regualy 22 lr hp. nothing near as destructive as the jhp 22 mag ammo. I just got some armscor 22 mag ammo from the phillipines for $7.00 a box. havent tried it yet, will post a range report when I do

Not a rifle but my AMT 6in bbl pistol loves the Federal JHP but the muzzle flash is so bad that even in full sunlight it will scare lots of folks. [8D]

Winchester Premium Hollowpoints in the black and gold box. Excellent in my Single Six, my 77/22, and over a dozen different Marlin 22 mags I've owned.

The best is whatever your rifle likes best. Try as big a pile as you can find. There will be one it groups best and is most accurate with. That is the best for that rifle.

There simply is no objective best that is the best in every rifle.

I've never owned a Savage in .22 Magnum but all of the Marlin .22 Magnums that I have owned and shot, liked the Winchester Super X ammo.

A fellow Washingtonian, welcome. I've had a Ruger 77/22 WRM for years. The CCI Maxi Mag have proven to be the most consistant and available over the years. That said, you've gotten good advice, try everything you can get you hands on. I bought 2 cartons (1000rds) of Bitterroot Valley 40gr-JHP from Cheaper Than Dirt last year. On sale $60.00 a carton at my door. They shoot right with CCI, maybe not quit as consistant, but real close. Haven't been able to come close to that price again. Infact it's real hard to even find the ammo. It's made in Montana at Florence. I haven't tried contacting the factory, it might be my next step.

The best rounds for your rifle, is what ever it likes best. You can only find this by trial and error. Get several different boxes, and shoot groups with all of them to tdetermine this, and then go get several boxes of what it likes. Each gun is its own individual, and might not like what someone elses likes. I have two 22 WMR's. A Ruger 77/22 Varmint, and an Anschutz Woodchucker. The Ruger has been modified, and loves the Winchester Supreme 34 grain copper JACKETED hollow points, where the Woodchucker likes the CCI Maxi-Mag+V's the best.
