Which is better Hornady varmint express 17 grain or CCI 20 grain bullets?

  Where I work I have seen better results with the Hornady insofar as accuracy is concerned; not by a large margin, but still the winner all the same. The seemingly miniscule difference between the 17 and 20 grain pills is, for a 17 bore, a fairly big weight difference...something like 15 percent in fact. I still think it comes down to the individual rifle in terms of making an ammunition preferrence choice; some like one brand and not others.

  Have not had any success with the CCI .
  I shoot Hornady and Federal .

  Try both. It is all a function of what the rifle likes. My rifle shoots the 17 gr better, my friemd's rifle shoots the 20 gr much better than any of the 17 gr bullets. His rifle outshoots mine. 100 yards I can shoot a 3/4 inch group, his rifle shoots 1/2 inch with the 20 gr bullet.

  In a somewhat limited test, my Ruger 77-17HMR shot the Hornady so well I didn't look at anything else.

  Which ever one works better in your rifle. My Green Mountain custom barrel'd Ruger 77/22 doesn't seem to be particular and they all work very well in it. Just don't expect them all to shoot to the same point of impact interchangably.

  From my Marlin 17V the CCI always shot to a different point of impact than the Hornady or Remington ammo. I like the Remington and Hornady ammo personally.
  
  I just went out tuesday morning squirrel hunting with my Marlin 17V and killed 10 squirrels with 11 shots. The first shot was off but it was my fault getting used to the rifle and Rifle Basix trigger again. I have not fired this rifle in about 3 years.
  
  I was shooting 65 yards or better and wacked em and stacked em.

  Mine likes Hornady 20 grain best, but shoots others acceptably. You need to run several brands and both grain weights through your rifle to see what it likes. It will take less than a box of each to sort it out.
