I used 225 Hornadys in mine, although I never shot game with them. I did use them for buddies 338 Ultra Mag and they have killed 5 elk with them.

For the wallop the round was designed to deliver, my opinion is to stay to the heavier end of the scale. There originally was a 300 grain factory load year ago.

It all depends what twist rate you have in your barrel. I would stick with the Barnes 210 grain TSX or Tipped TSX bullet. They should work with a faster or slower twist. They should provide a whole lot of WHIP A$$ for what ever you want to shoot with them.

I have a Ruger M77 MKII in .338 WM (1:10 twist w/ 22" barrel) and I started with factory loads - Hornady .225 gr SST

I am currently fine tuning handloads with similar result using .225 gr NABs, H4831SC, and CCI250.

Recoil depends on bullet weight, velocity, powder charge, and weight of firearm. "Felt recoil" is different for each person, what is excessive for me might not be for you and vice versa.

my win. m-70 refuses to shoot anything heaveier than 200 gn bullets, it realy likes the nosler 180 or 200 grn bt's (4 elk, 4 shots).

I've had the best luck with hornady 225 over a mx load of 4831 in my ruger 77. on my birthday in 1986, I fired a 3 shot group at 100 yards with a slightly enlarged single hole!!! I hve taken bear, elk, deer and antalope with this load since then. I at first tried hornady 200 gr with a top load of 4350. I shoot 2 different antalope at about 150 yards. both times the bullet hit them dead on in the chest, and blew a coffee cup cirle of hair off. both antelope took off at top speed, I never did find them.

My old Browning A-bolt liked the Winchester 225 gr power points best for some reason. Try a few different brands/weights (Or if you choose to reload bullets and powder combos) and see what yours likes.

The biggest plus for reloading for it is you can throttle it down with lighter bullets and make it like a .338 Federal for lower recoil and better use for deer-sized critters if you want.
