    Looks like 1970.
I can't help with a box. Cardboard and foam in those days, not something a lot of people kept around. Those that did are hanging on to them to enhance the value of their guns.

That's what it says at www.proofhouse.com

If you want it from the horsie's mouth, call Colt tomorrow at 1-800-962-COLT They will tell you the year made but no other information unless you pay $100 for a factory archive letter.

Oh, dear. Let me try to explain how serial numbers get bigger as time goes on. When they made J9999 it had four numbers. The next gun they made was J10000 with five numbers. Got it?
The serial number at the first of 1970 was J8601. The serial number at the first of 1971 was J50201. So anything from J8601 to J50200 was made in 1970.

On the site that you showed me Hawk it doesnt look like the 1970 model has enough numbers in it. I am not sure though I dont know how to read these numbers but the serial number I have has five. onthe site for the 70' model it is only 4 numbers.
