Value of Winchester Lone Star Commerative rifle?
Hi guys. I have a Winchester Lone Star Commemorative rifle that my father bought new in 1970. Its story is that my dad was in the Connecticut National Guard at the time and this model was made available to their unit. Unfortunately, he didn't get the matching carbine.
It's never been fired, or even dry fired, but we don't have the original box. I'm not sure if any papers can be found in the family records. It's in very good - excellent, all original, condition with some patina.
My dilemma is that I'd really like to go to the local shooting range with my dad and have him show me how to fire it. If it does have value to a collector, even though I'd never sell it, I'm sure that's a bad idea. But if this gun doesn't have the potential to be valuable, I'd like to use it.
Any opinions either way would be appreciated.

Don't shoot it. These sell in the $550- $600 range. You can buy a nice shooter for about half that price. As long as yours remains unfired the value will only go up. 0 -
Rest easy, and fire that thing! 99% of all the commemeratives do not hold much value past their contemporary counterparts. Basically it was a Winchester rifle, that was purchased in a lot by a place like the Franklin Mint, and dressed up. With the minor surface blemishes you say are present, that drops the value further. You are looking at a $300.00-350.00 gun at best.

Without the box it is a shooter. $350.00- $400.00 0 -
"Patina" isn't a positive on any firearm as far as collectors are concerned, let alone a commemorative. Over and above not being in the original box and without paperwork and accessories that came with it.
Not harm or loss of value in shooting it, because of the above.0 -
Never be a Collector item without box . Shoot and enjoy. 0 -
I agree to shoot it. There are millions of unsold commemorative Winchesters around still new in their boxes and there will be for a very long time. Although your rifle has some value without the box and paperwork, having fun with your dad is worth a lot more. 0 -
Shoot the gun, I purchased a Buffalo Bill 20" oct barrel rifle to send my daughter through hunter safety. She liked to the look of the 1894 short rifles that we have (2 of them with 20" oct barrels). New paid 400 for it. best money I spent. She and my son went to the course he had a src 1894 from 1912. The both have great memories from the comments they recieved on the guns. 0 -
I see commeratives in boxes unsold that have been to more gunshows than I have in the last 25 years. Shoot it, 94s are fun. Without the box and in less that 100% condition it is a hunting rifle. 0 -
Thanks guys.. we're going to shoot it! 0
