New truck purchase off. Pre-op test-in am.
Took me a week to get a clean Carfax report. They blindsided me when I started to get numbers at local Chrysler dealer.
Present truck is a 2020 Ram Laramie Longhorn 5.7L with 24,000 miles. New truck is a 2025 Laramie with 5 miles and 3.0L Twin Turbo Hurricane Engine. Only two other trucks within 100 miles like this one with light leather interior.
MSRP on my truck was $65,710 and new truck is $72,415 for a lesser truck after five years. There's some inflation for you. I thought dealer would be closed today but was not. Complained about trade allowance and big cheese gave me another $1,200. on top of factory rebates and vet disc.
Came home and spent all day researching that new engine. I won't bite on Chrysler's back because the 5.7L has been good to me. I see trouble on the horizon for Ram and that Hurricane engine. Just my two cents. We will see in time. Truck I was going to buy was beautiful but I will walk away.
I hope our Country is headed for better times or these Hi-end trucks will end up rotting on the dealers lot. My Laramie Longhorn is now a Laramie Longhorn Limited. Priced one like mine and it was $87,000+. The Silverado Hi-Countrys are pushing $90,000 and over. Insane.
Tomorrow very early I am off to Hospital for Pre-op test. ——————-Ray

Not to be snarky, but WHY would you buy a new truck when the old one only has 24,000 miles???
Seems like a waste of money to me. New vehicles are SUCH a ripoff because of that depreciation……

Mercury, you are not snarky. ☺️ out of 5 yr warranty, i am a old fart at 81 years and tired of doing my own work . Starting to hurt crawling over and under that truck. Couple weeks ago I put a new battery in and I had horrific pain in my right shoulder for 10 days. Thought I was going to have to go for 6mo of PT and cancel my Hernia Operation on Jan 8th. I agree new trucks are a rip off. By the way, have you priced good extended warranties lately. Curiosity was part of the game to see what my corrected Carfax report would do to the big picture. Got some pressure from my loving daughter and SIL to own a truck under warranty. Love my 5.7L and am going to keep it for as long as I can.————————Ray
PS: Crossed my mind also, what a nice gift to my daughter and SIL to haul her two horses with should I kick off soon.

Against my son's advice, I went and bought a 2020 Ram 1500. My son worked at Dodge for a while after college. So far, I had to replace the sway arms on the front, and then the tranny went. That was what he warned me about the most, was the transmission having problems. I love the truck and will keep it. Thank God he fixed it for me.

What ever you Dodge boys do, don't ever let the trucks set an idle for long periods of time.
Death to a 5.7

My neighbor and friend in Kents Store, Virginia has 4 Dodge Diesel Power Wagons and a couple for parts. Made in the 80's I believe. Works on them all the time but never has any repair bills. He loves those things like I love my 37 Winchesters.
No idling for me. I have burned up I84, I81 and I64 five times since mid- May——Ray

Say are you gonna live in that house payment on wheels? $90 grand truck you can't work on without a phd? Forget that.
Being 81 do you really need a new ride?

Every time I get out on the road it is full of 80k+ vehicles. Yet wages have not went up like inflation. One of my early jobs in the 1980 s was working collections in a bank along with other duties. I would say collections is a full-time job now. Another bad is the new stuff is very expensive to maintain, and down time can cost thousands to fix, to many electronics that is just a matter of time before they go haywire.

For what you will lose in the trade/buy you can afford to just keep what is a basically still new truck and pay a mechanic for regular maintenance and still cover any major repair in the coming years, I would not worry about not having the warranty anymore, after 25,000 miles of basically no problems the chances of anything major happening before you catch it are slim, for those how have no "car sense" most major problems happen unexpectedly , you are a car guy so most likely will sense something going wrong way before it becomes a major outlay of repair money. another 4 years at your mileage will still be only 50,000 miles, with the Hemi just properly broken in ! 😀 The odds are currently on your side for keeping the '20,

Tank78Z, could not agree more. Wait till the folks that depend on that new Hurricane engine for their living, contractors etc. start to beat it up. Going to be hard to work on and expensive to maintain. Hurricane engine sitting in a work truck a lot different than sitting in a Waggoneer with a football/soccer mom. ———————-Ray

' i am a old fart at 81 years and tired of doing my own work .'
My Son is driving one of those ( a rental) while waiting for his next work vehicle. Let me assure you that as an 81 year old, you DO NOT WANT THAT VEHICLE. It's a young man's toy and even with running boards is difficult to get in and out of. In addition, it's performance capability may be well above the operator's capability to respond to it's 'gitty up'. Simply finding tires that don't howl and scream may be a problem.

I think some here missed the point. Truck I was interested in was MSRP of $72,000 not $90,000. Deal was going to cost me $32,000 but I elected to walk away and keep my 2020 Ram 5.7L with 24,000 miles.———————Ray

Why spend money when you don't need to .Odds are the truck will outlast you if given good care. My last truck lasted me 23 years . At almost 70 ,I expect my new to me 2018 f150 will outlast me ability to drive .

Just curious what what was the trade allowance on your present truck?

I haven't owned a vehicle with 24,000 (or less) miles on it this century. The last NEW vehicle (1998) wasn't even mine—I leased it.
Also. Being concerned about having to 'work on' a vehicle with 24K (or even twice that) doesn't say much for the brand name.😕

I don't plan on buying any new truck unless someone runs into mine. Bought a 2014 F250 x cab 4x4 8' bed 6 yrs ago with 21k mile on it. New ones today are ridiculous 70k up. That 20k spent on mine back then seems a real bargain in today money. I put 3500 mile on it last yr. Has not quite 65k on it now. If the motor or transmission blew up tomorrow I would just replace the drive train. Taxes and insurance are cheaper on it also

I have a 2004 Tundra that I bought when my old Nissan Frontier had about 250,000 miles.I gave the Nissan to my older son when he was in high school and when he bought another truck he gave the Nissan to my younger son. When the younger son bought another truck I got the Nissan back.I drive it back and forth to work, haul trash and just a general knock around truck. It is about to roll over 530,000 miles and still runs fine.I don't know what I will buy when the old Nissan gives up because no company still builds small, tough small trucks that get 25 MPG anymore. From what I understand newer Frontiers and Tacomas get terrible fuel mileage.

My son is a West Virginia ME Grad. Very smart kid. Top of his class. I wished he had stayed on the cutting edge of technology. He works for the biggest bank in the country now. That is where the big bucks are. Headhunter wanted his brain and so did the bank.
Someday soon probably some young bright ME will probably say "why did we do that. All we had to do is Turbo Charge the 5.7L."
I was offered $36,200 for my truck and I came up with $42,000+ on Kelley Blue Book trade in. Even though excellent I chose very good. Dealer claims a glut on used truck market now. I call BS. They are all crooks.
Tonight my 2020 5.7L Ram Laramie Longhorn is sleeping in the driveway and so happy that I did not trade her in on a new truck. Tomorrow at 8am I will get her inspected and she will be even more happy. ——————Ray
PS: Almost forgot. Factory rebates over today. Then what? No one knows.

I should add my f150 was bought used in 2020 with 28k miles . I am up to 70k . Only expenses have been rear brakes and a new set of top of the line Michelin tires so far .At about11k miles a year I got a ways to go

The two front hub bearing assemblies, for our 2008 4runner V8(about 140,000 miles), should arrive in the mail this afternoon. I had to carefully select them, in order to make sure the bearings were Koyo brand(made in Japan........NOT China).
12 bolts per side..…..I think I can still handle that......for $323.64 w/TT&L.
Hardest part.......is finding where my wife hid my floor jacks!🤯

Ray take that 400-500 you would have spent on new truck payment, and open a new savings account just make the monthly deposit in it. In 6 months or so you will have enough to pay for most any repair needed. Just keep putting it in each month and you would be surprised at what you will have in few years……….

Mr.P, you bet your sweet bippie its Relevant.
2020 5.7L Ram Laramie Longhorn MSRP $65,710. ——2025 3.0L Twin Turbo Charged Hurricane Eng. Laramie (a lesser truck) Standard not HO, MSRP $72,415.

Hillbille, know you mean well but I already did that. Have not made a truck payment in over 30 years.
A little system that also worked for me: The first classmen at West Point were always looking for a very clean reliable truck to take all their gear to the West Coast or new duty assignment school. I just happened to have what they were looking for every four years. Government paid their tuition and mom/dad paid me. Word gets around.
Of course been retired for many years now and lost all my contacts at West Point, but at the time it worked great. —————Ray
